  Shop Class, Fall of 1968
Posted by: bandit571 - 06-25-2024, 11:31 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (29)

I took IND ARTS as a Freshman that year...the old High School Building had built a NEW basketball Gym...so..the original was converted into a classroom.   Original bleachers were removed..the Balcony above them walled off, with windows added...The NEW Classroom in the Balcony became  the Drafting Classroom...where we sit at drafting tables and learn to draw..

The old Gym floor was now concrete..there were a series of 4 person benches...square shaped, a quick acting vise at each corner, the base was metal filled with lockers...Scorer's Table area was turned into a Tool Crib.    Shop Floor was also equipped with all sorts of power tools made at the nearby Rockwell Factory...there was an area set aside to practize metalworking. foundry work, and welding.

However.....as incoming Freshman..we only got to learn with hand tools....until we passed the Test.    We were given a set of worksheets..each had a diagram of 2 or 3 wood working joints.   Like this for Page#1..

Once you completed a wood joint, you entered the date completed..and then the Teacher would inspect the joint, and post a Grade in the space provided..

Hand tools only..and YOU had to sign them out at the Tool Crib...and sign them back in at the end of the 30 minute class.   You also spent you turn IN the Tool Crib.  Plus there was at least one day a week up in Drafting Class.

Thinking about doing a "Class" here...IF people want to follow along..

  Antique Bronze Carafe
Posted by: Splinterz25 - 06-25-2024, 10:27 AM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (2)

Hello once again everyone I have just put the final touches on my latest piece. This Oak piece was off center turned from 4 pieces of Oak that were turned to a rough shape then hand carved, the handle is carved from one piece of Oak and then attached to the vessel. The whole piece was then scorched with a torched hand rubbed with bees wax and then colored with Rub-N- Buff. The finished size is 10"x 20"  The piece is available to purchase.

Posted by: Dave Diaman - 06-25-2024, 08:04 AM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - No Replies

I am selling a Kreg beaded face frame jig. This should work with just about any router table that has a t track. I’m selling the jig and bits for $225. I am also including all the bits it cut 1/4” beads. These bits are not pictured. I’m having issues with photos right now so if you message me I can send photos. If you check Kregs site the jug without the extra bits is $449.00.

  DeWalt 18v to 20v adapter?
Posted by: lift mechanic - 06-24-2024, 08:11 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (4)

4 out of 6 18v batteries no longer take a charge. I bought an adapter and 2 - 20 v 2AH batteries as a kit. The 2AH batteries do not last very long. I need larger batteries or some other brand of 18v batteries. I would change to 20v tools but I have 12 tools that use the 18v batteries. Any suggestions as to a good replacement. Not all 20v batteries work with the adapter, so I am told. Thanks, Mark

Just Bought A Ridgid Band Saw - BS14002 - Need Blade Advice
Posted by: Paladin - 06-23-2024, 03:11 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (11)

This will be the one and only bandsaw in my shop. It did not come with a blade. I do not like changing blades. Thus, I would like to choose a blade (93 1/2") that I
can leave on and use it for almost everything. I will not be re-sawing 12" wide hard maple, or making little doodads like on a scroll... so....just every day hobbyist
band saw use. Thus the question: what blade (size and manufacturer) might be the "do all" blade I am looking for? I assume I will get carbide, as I think it is worth the money.

Thanks for your help.

  DC 09 Chairs - completion

The background is the decision to build a larger dining table, one to seat 8 as opposed to the 6 as with the current table ...

Since the new table will have a contemporary, modern design, the carver chairs would fit with this, and the existing vintage bentwood chairs would blend in. My wife and I liked the size of this table (not the design), and were taken with the chairs ...

[Image: est-living-sorrento-light-house-wolverid...50x540.jpg]

Here they are from all angles ...

And this is the one I used as a model ...

Now the challenge was to build two chairs as close as possible without any given plans and having to create these and the dimensions from photos on the Internet. All-in-all, I spent some 5 months (of weekends) building these two chairs, in USA Rock Maple (which will be used for the top of the new dining table). I am definitely certifiable.

The build is elsewhere but I shall add a few photos here of the finishing tasks.

The first was that of glueing the arms to the legs. With all the angles, it was not possible to use clamps. My solution was to use packing tape - it has a little flex to pull tighter, and will hold at any angle ...

The second task was to cut the end of the legs square with the floor. The kitchen bench top was a more reliable choice than the workshop floor ...

The chairs were sanded to 240 grit and received a coat of hard wax oil. Tomorrow I will denib this and add a second coat. Here are photos from various angles. How close did I get ...
