  HSS handleless tool blanks
Posted by: thinshavings - 06-16-2024, 08:33 PM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (12)

Where can I buy HSS tool blanks that I can grind custom profiles?
I bought some from Woodcraft probably close to 30 years ago, I didn't see any on their website now.
Looking for 1 to 1.25 inch in width and 1/8 thick.

Question Design Question - Will this topple?
Posted by: bpatters69 - 06-16-2024, 10:20 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (14)

Hello All,

I have a friend who asked me to build her a sewing station on wheels. I would post a picture of the design but its basically a box (like everything we do) that has the following measurements:

18" Wide x 33" Height x 40" Long

I plan to buy 3" casters so the cart will be mobile. This makes the total height 33" + 3" or 36"

Also, she wants a solid wood top that has 18" leafs which can be opened and supported by arms that get stored in the top when not in use.

So we would potentially have an 18" + 18" + 18" top on a 18" base that is 36" high.

I think we need a wider base....

Your thoughts?

Thanks, Bill

Trouble Squaring Grizz 1023 to Blade
Posted by: David Stone - 06-15-2024, 02:56 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (4)

I’m having problems. I have a Grizz 1023, about 20 years old. I used a Woodpecker saw gauge, and it shows that the back of the blade is 3/1000’’ farther from the miter slot than the front. That seems acceptable. If I try to loosen the top of my saw, I’m pretty sure i’ll make it worse.

I just set up an Incra Miter 5000 on the saw. I did a 5 cut test on some ply that started about 12’’ square. After the last cut, the back of the piece was .9545’’ and the front was .9245. That’s 3/100’’ out of whack? Is that acceptable?

But then I tried to square up a panel for some cabinets I’m building. They started 24’’ x 42’’. I put one long edge against the miter fence and just clean cut one short edge. The flipped it over, keeping the same edge on the fence and cut it to 41’’. What I got was a panel that was 41’’ on the near side, but 40 7/16’’ on the far side. That seems to be quite a bit more error.

Any suggestions for what I need to adjust? I thought the Incra was supposed to be square right out of the box.

  Which resin?
Posted by: goaliedad - 06-15-2024, 02:04 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (1)

I am building a blanket chest from “rustic hickory “.
It will have a dark stain per my sister in law’s request.
I need to fill some knots. Years ago I did a similar thing with a table- but the knots were smaller. I used bondo fiberglass resin and added some black paint.
I think there are better options_ but which resin do I use?

Locally I have Home Depot. Do most likely it will be an on line order.

Any input is welcome.

Thanks

  Adventures in Pine
Posted by: bandit571 - 06-15-2024, 06:54 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (8)

Ok..first off, this is a Build-along thread.   IF someone does not care for the word "Pine"..move along.

Before I can even get started, things needed put away..

"Clear for ACTION!"

I took an inventory of the leftovers from the last Project..

Hmmm..maybe build a case or 2?

As both this Union No. 41 and a Stanley No. 66 could use a place to call home?   After all, this fancy plane has one..

So..close the lid on this one, and put it away..

leftovers are all 3/4" thick...so I'll need to resaw them down to about 3/8" thick.  At 3-1/2" wide, they MIGHT be a tad too tall....

A few tools did stay out on the bench...

Will see if I need some of them...for now...take a good look..

As this Work Area won't stay this way for long..

Stay tuned...

  Finally Finished It
Posted by: jteneyck - 06-14-2024, 07:19 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (14)

The guy who's transporting the Lane Acclaim table I made for a lady in DC is finally coming to pick it up on Monday.  I've been keeping the finished pieces in my sauna for safe keeping.  So now that it's going to leave, I brought the pieces upstairs today put it together in my garage.

The extension mechanism is massive and operates exceedingly smoothly.  It's from Poettker.

Right side up now.

It's 42" diameter.  Sure looks small in my garage.  There are three leaves that can be added.

I like it best with 2 leaves.  I hope the lady I built if for likes it, too.

SOLD - Pair of Crescent 20" bandsaws for restoration, New Jersey
Posted by: Chuckhead - 06-11-2024, 05:05 PM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - No Replies

SOLD - Pair of classic large 20" bandsaws for restoration. Beautiful machines but definitely need to be restored. One is a Crescent with a massive 1 hp 3 phase Crocker Wheeler motor, the other is a Delta Milwaukee Crescent with a 1 hp single phase Rockwell motor. I bought these about 20 years ago to restore but never got around to it. Now I just need them out of my garage. $800/pair.  I really want to sell both, but will sell either alone for $600.
