WTB: 6/4 (or similar) dark wood
Posted by: Dumb_Polack - 09-13-2024, 01:21 PM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - Replies (1)

I started on this chessboard last weekend, but when I applied to Danish Oil (or even just clear poly), the cedar and cherry I'm using didn't contrast all that well.  So, I'm trying to find some darker 6/4 wood for the dark "columns".  I've got plenty of the white cedar so I'll be cutting around all the knots.

I figure I need a 6/4 piece that's about 1 ft long and maybe 8-10" wide.  (I can't do the board feet calculation in my head).

Do you have a piece like that?   Or even 6/4 offcuts, I'll take those.  The tallest column I need is 4" and they step down 1/2" from there.  Any dark wood will do.

Name you (reasonable) price if you do.  Thanks!  (I'm in Mass so I'll tack on the shipping costs).

  Cast iron stains
Posted by: blanning - 09-13-2024, 11:17 AM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (10)

I recently bought a lathe from grizzly.  So far I love it.  But it has one minor problem.  The way it's shipped, the cast iron legs are stored on top of the bed in the crate.  This has caused a stain on the bed.  It's smooth as glass.  So it's just a discoloration.  I tried some rust stain remover that came with the Boeshield.  And it helped slightly.  But nowhere near enough.

Is there a good way to clean these kinds of stains off of cast iron?

"Le Bol"- My first CNC/lathe segment bowl project
Posted by: mtrainer90 - 09-11-2024, 08:59 AM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (1)

Making a bowl out of a red cedar dresser top for the people I work with at Air France to put in their office. The base features a cut out done on my new FoxAlien 4040 XE-PRO which was then filled with Alumilite Clear Slow resin. Segmented rings made from the same cedar top were then added as the sides of the bowl. After turning the project was sanded from 80-600 grit before applying Mylands Sanding sealer and polishing with Acks Woodpaste. The bowl was finally finished with clear acrylic enamel.

  XERXES DECANTER
Posted by: Splinterz25 - 09-10-2024, 01:43 PM - Forum: Woodturning - No Replies

"Xerxes Decanter"
This piece is made from Canarywood, Padauk and Blackwood. The finished size is 14" x 24" x 4" most parts are first turned on the lathe then assembled. The final finish is Deft sanding sealer. This piece could pour liquid if lined with resin. the neck, handle and spout were sliced and two thin strips of Padauk were added to each for a detail.

  SCORPIUS
Posted by: Splinterz25 - 09-09-2024, 09:14 PM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (1)

Hello once again everyone here is my latest piece "SCORPIUS"
This piece finished at 13" x 10" x 8" it was mostly turned on the lathe then steamed bent, carved cut apart reassembled and colored. Made from Curupau and Canarywood. The final finish is satin lacquer. I have photos showing this on the lathe and as I worked on it if anyone wants to see them please let me know. The Curupau  legs were dyed with amber alcohol ink to match the Canarywood.

Older craftsman 12 in miter saw
Posted by: gear jammer - 09-09-2024, 12:09 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (5)

Cutting a piece of 3 X 3 red oak with the green tint from metal. Found the bolt in the piece. My craftsman is old but has been a great and dependable saw. The bolt in the wood took out my back fence and I think bent the shaft in the motor.

Looking at 12 in. miter saws. Dewalt seems to be the high rated ones. Your thoughts on the Dewalt 12 in dual bevel saws would be appreciated. Or any other recommendations for my hobby shop.

Thanks.

  Plan Search
Posted by: professore - 09-09-2024, 10:33 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (8)

I'm looking for a plan for a table-top picture easel that appeared in WOOD magazine many years ago.  It was made of cherry and stood about 15 inches tall.  It had a tab that was glued between the front two legs that also served as the pivot point for the rear leg.  The easel part on the front was adjustable for height.

I've searched the website but didn't have any luck there. I don't want to pirate the plan; I have back issues, but can't find it.   Maybe someone here has a searchable index for WOOD magazine although that's probably unlikely given WOOD's proprietary nature.  Any help woiuld be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

  Remove fence post in concrete
Posted by: CEPenworks - 09-08-2024, 03:47 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (20)

I have an 8" round fence post that rotted off. This post is set next to a vinyl post. Both of these posts are set in the same concrete. There is probably 1'-2' of concrete at the bottom of the hole. Any ideas how to get the post out so I can replace it?
