Why are soft-grip pliers all low-friction?
Posted by: iclark - 01-29-2025, 09:17 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (8)

I got some soft grip pliers to use on fixtures in the bathroom and on stuff in the shop that I do not want to mark with plier jaw marks.

Both brands that I bought had nylon-like jaw inserts so that they had no grip at all on plated surfaces.

I got reminded of this tonight by the Lee Valley email that included a link for their soft-grip pliers.

They look really well designed, but, once again, the jaw inserts and the replacement jaw inserts are nylon.

The description points out that they are great for knurled surfaces. I am sure that they are.

BUT, where can I find replacement jaws or soft-grip pliers that have high-friction soft jaws?

New user email verification system broken
Posted by: MKepke - 01-29-2025, 09:42 AM - Forum: Questions about using the WoodNet forum features - Replies (4)

Based on personal experience, the email verification system used for registering new users is broken:

Despite multiple requests to the WN system to send a verification email over the last week, no such email is received.

(After registering as a new user, email verification is required before posting and other functions are allowed.)

I started some other threads with different but related problems. The net effect is losing my password locks me out of the system as all the methods of recourse are broken.

I'm curious if many other folks have experienced the same thing (either as an existing or new user) and simply gave up trying to get onto Woodnet and went elsewhere.

Woodnet's Contact Us function is broken

Based on personal experience, the WN Contact Us function is broken. Link here:

Multiple requests go unanswered after a week. The system at least acknowledge a request was submitted tho.

Email system for password reset (still) broken
Posted by: MKepke - 01-29-2025, 09:29 AM - Forum: Questions about using the WoodNet forum features - Replies (2)

Based on my personal experience, Woodnet's send-you-an-email-to-reset-your password function is broken:

* despite repeated requests, an email is not received.

* Also, the Woodnet system also does not provide the user with any feedback re: success or failure of the request. I can't tell if this is 'design intent' but it isn't good practice.

If you lose your password, you are locked out the system because that's the only way to reset it that I have found.

This is the same problem I reported in 2022.

  Using a Plane
Posted by: Petertaylor - 01-27-2025, 12:17 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (2)

I have had a Dunlop plane for many years. Used it a few times along the edge of a door so it would close properly. I would never use it on the surface of a good piece of wood, as it would tear a chunk out. After watching this guy on YouTube, I just planed the entire surface of a walnut farm table I’m making ! WOW !

  Decisions decisions

So I have several Bog oak saws to finish yet, but I got a wild hair today. I made a bunch of folded backs a few years ago but got distracted with this house and never finished them. Most need to go to a gun shop and get blued. I did however play around with some 316 and 304 stainless, SO today I drug one out and put it on a bog oak carcass saw handle I was finishing up. Debating if I want to go through the trouble of making more stainless backs or just stay with the slotted brass. Pros and cons of both. I am not a big fan of folded backs. Then again, have you ever tried to slot stainless steel? YIKES! Better to go with 4130 and have it plated. What do you think?

So I decided to go with the brass, at least on this one.
