  Wood for Shutters
Posted by: jteneyck - 03-24-2025, 03:52 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (25)

I built some house shutters 5 years ago using white pine for the frames and MDO for the solid panels.  After 5 years they are badly rotted.  I never would have expected that.  I used primer and SW's Emerald exerior paint, yet the water got in and did it's work.  So now I have to replace them.

I've been thinking about using AZEK for both the frames and panels, but am concerned about warpage of the frames in the hot sun.  This is WNY, but it still gets really hot in the afternoon when facing west, which these shutters do.  Then I thought about Utile, Spanish cedar, and northern white cedar.  I can get 5/4 Utile locally.  Not sure about the Spanish cedar or northern white cedar though.  Has anyone used AZEK or any of these woods for exterior shutters?  I'm planning to use 1/2" PVC sheet for the panels, no matter what the frames are made of.

How do you hang tools on the wall?
Posted by: Randy C - 03-24-2025, 12:20 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (20)

I’m building a corner workbench and I want to hang some tools above the bench. I have looked at pegboard(which looks really nice) but it has some disadvantages such as the hooks sometimes fall off the board, the hooks are relatively expensive, etc.

I also saw a you tube video by a man named Herrick Kimball who uses 12 gauge Romex copper wire to fashion various ways to hold his tools to a sheet of plywood attached to the wall. The advantage to what he is doing is the copper wire is cheap and he can bend the wire to accommodate the tool better than the standard hooks and brackets that the pegboard system uses. With his system he is able to space the tools such that he can get more tools on the wall than you could with the pegboard system.

I also know that there are French cleats that come in handy for attaching some tools to the wall.

So what do you guys use and do you have any other ideas that you like?

Thanks

Tongue Metal staining problem
Posted by: TFM - 03-24-2025, 11:25 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (2)

Hi there.  As you can see from the photos, I'm having a problem with rust/staining on my tools.  I soaked the rule in WD40 rust remover soak overnight, and it made the problem WORSE.   Ditto the saw.  it had some light rust a while back I tried rubbing it out with the soak to little effect.  Can anyone recommend how to clean these tools up?

Thanks,
Tim

Finish on both sides of a tabletop
Posted by: Petertaylor - 03-23-2025, 04:22 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (5)

We are building an 8-foot table with 2x6 walnut. The top will have two or three coats of Arm-R-Seal. Does the underside need the same finish, or can we use water-based polyurethane?  Thanks.  —Peter

Black spots on the inside of a Cedar Chest
Posted by: doobes - 03-22-2025, 12:57 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (1)

Dunno if this is the right place for this, but let's try.

We have a Cedar Chest that we got from my wife's mother.  It's solid cedar, hand made many, many years ago.

It's been sitting full of pillows and stuff for quite some time.

My wife opened it today and the bottom is full of black spots.

Is this mold? It's in the wood, not on top.  In other words, you can't wipe it away (at least easily). This chest was flooded in Katrina some 20 years ago.  We carefully treated EVERYTHING that we kept after the storm to prevent mold. The bottom doesn't exhibit any of this.

If so, how do I clean it?

LOML is a bit of a clean freak, and needless to say, it has freaked her out. About the only reason it's not already on the curb is that there is a lot of sentimental attachment to it.

Thanks

  Sink Drain plumbing
Posted by: Maddog - 03-22-2025, 07:54 AM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (5)

Does anyone use any kind of sealant/adhesive  on plastic drain plumbing fittings under the sink?
Have one particular fitting that comes apart and wonder if that could be a solution.
I know it typically isn't necessary but looking for a solution.
Thanks

  Barn for Sale
Posted by: MstrCarpenter - 03-20-2025, 08:33 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (2)

This is a duplicate of a thread in woodworking;
Hey friends, I'm looking for suggestions on where to post (advertise) a post and beam barn that has to be removed from the property. I know it can just be ripped down and thrown in dumpsters, but it seems a shame to do that. It may be more cost effective to give it away, assuming the recipient takes it all. I can have someone list it on Craigs list and Marketplace but is there anywhere more appropriate? It's in southeastern NH.

  Two rip saws for sale
Posted by: tablesawtom - 03-20-2025, 10:03 AM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - Replies (2)

I have two Disston and Sons thumb hole rip saws for sale. I can see the etching on the blades but they are vary hard to read. Both blades are 5 1/2 teeth per inch. Both handles are complete with no horns broken off . No cracks or anything.

First is #1. If you look at the teeth one can still see the shine of when it was sharpened last. One has to really look but, There are  a few teeth that show the very top of the teeth blunted. I am just putting  in my two cents is but I think the teeth just needed another pass with the file. I only mention it because I want to be up front. I think it will be a good performer for quit some time before it needs sharpening again. The saw plate is straight, no bends or kinks.

The second one is sharp but it show a little use. And it will be a long time before it needs sharpening. The handle shows a lot of use in that it has a lot of grime from hand use. If refinished it would be as beautiful as it was when it left the factory. All in all other than cosmetics, it is every bit as good as saw #1

It is hard to get good pictures of long objects to I just placed them side by side and took the pictures.

Asking $50 plus shipping for each.

  Melamine for workbench top
Posted by: Randy C - 03-20-2025, 09:22 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (3)

As stated in earlier post I’m building a corner workbench in my shop which will see light duty use. Does anyone have any experience with melamine? Was thinking about using 3/4 MDF as base and was wondering if a sheet of 3/4 Melamine on top of the MDF would be a good option. Other option is 2 layers of MDF covered by 1/4 hardboard.

Thanks
