Ransomware attack |

I posted in another thread that several WN self-admin tools are broken (for me anyways).
Subsequently I received the following note from a WN admin. I assume he/she doesn't mind if I share.
FYI:
" We had a ransomware attack early Monday morning and are in the process of rebuilding all our servers - some are back but it may be early next week before the system is fully up and functioning. Sorry for inconvenience."

Ok so I have been on a role in the little shop trying to clear out MORE unfinished saw blanks, etc..
First up my personal 17ppi 12" x canted 2" x 0.020" dovetail with mother of pearl inlay and infused maple burl.

Lastly an open dovetail for a very patient customer

It's been a busy week, but progress finally made clearing out those unsung songs hiding in work bench drawers. Just one drawer left. ( I think) Almost time to start working on this old shack again. Oye Vey.
Well it seems I forgot one last night. I told you it's been a long week.
So here is a 12" x 3" carcass saw filed 14ppi x 15* rake x 25* fleam in walnut. I may clip off the toe at some point as this style was meant to look more traditional.

And that is that for a long while. I owe, I owe, it's back to work I go.

A Different "Sharpening Thread"? |

But, still about an essential hand tool in my shop?
These..
Yes, I do know about those "Mechanical" ones out there....But, a good old No. 2 works just fine in my shop...they are cheap, and fairly easy to sharpen...I send mine "out" to Boston..either the full size one..
The old one that fits almost any sized Pencil, or, a more "specialized" one...
The Boston Ever Handy...that only takes one size...
And..I can get the pencils sharper than a needle...as often as I need them to be..
The Problems arise when this other style of Pencil needs sharpened...
Carpenter's Pencils. The main feature with these? They will never roll off the top of your bench and go hide somewhere...There was even a clip to hold one of these on the side of my Hard Hat...
Use to be, to sharpen one of these..depending on what was in your Tool Belt...
Everyone always had a Utility Knife....and they did work nice at the start of a day..with a fresh blade..
However, the chisel that rode around in one's tool belt, was rarely sharp enough...
Has the edge tended to be rather beat up...
There IS another way....and it does not involve an Angle Grinder, either....
Stay tuned..

Why are soft-grip pliers all low-friction? |

I got some soft grip pliers to use on fixtures in the bathroom and on stuff in the shop that I do not want to mark with plier jaw marks.
Both brands that I bought had nylon-like jaw inserts so that they had no grip at all on plated surfaces.
I got reminded of this tonight by the Lee Valley email that included a link for their soft-grip pliers.
They look really well designed, but, once again, the jaw inserts and the replacement jaw inserts are nylon.
The description points out that they are great for knurled surfaces. I am sure that they are.
BUT, where can I find replacement jaws or soft-grip pliers that have high-friction soft jaws?

New user email verification system broken |

Based on personal experience, the email verification system used for registering new users is broken:
Despite multiple requests to the WN system to send a verification email over the last week, no such email is received.
(After registering as a new user, email verification is required before posting and other functions are allowed.)
I started some other threads with different but related problems. The net effect is losing my password locks me out of the system as all the methods of recourse are broken.
I'm curious if many other folks have experienced the same thing (either as an existing or new user) and simply gave up trying to get onto Woodnet and went elsewhere.
