  Incra Jig Router Table
Posted by: JoePerri - 03-04-2024, 06:29 PM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - Replies (3)

Incra Jig router table. Precision router table jig, includes manual, templates and guides. Not sure if it is all there, I inherited it from a friend. Includes Delta mobile base, the base alone is worth $20.

Helical head for planer which one?
Posted by: JDuke - 03-04-2024, 01:16 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (23)

I have 2 Belsaw planer molders and a 13 inch rigid lunchbox planer.

I’d like to have a helical head in a planer and am looking for advice from those that have retrofit one.

The cost is substantially different at $1300 for kit for the belsaw and $450 for the rigid.
Both planers have similar width and the helical head will probably reduce the power required from the motor making me lean toward doing the lunchbox planer over the 5hp belsaw.
Also would be losing option of doing molding although I don’t do much molding and I have a second belsaw if there’s really a good reason to convert it.

What got me looking at this again, is there is a cutech branded helical head joiner about 100 miles away for sale that looks like an exact copy of the rigid design. All the way down to the little tool storage inset in one end.

Any opinions
Will the bigger size and more blade inserts on the belsaw make it that much better than the rigid?

Politics All you might want to know about sole "flatness"
Posted by: Timberwolf - 03-03-2024, 12:29 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (52)

cannot be found here on Woodnet...but it's a place to start..IMO, the two subjects most discussed on Woodnet are No.1.. sharpening and No2..flattening....but so far, no one has been able to define when the pinnacle of each each is achieved.

I did a little Youtubing this morning and found several channels that were very well done. I had an old Stanley catalog with a photo showing a Stanley employee holding a long plane's cast iron sole against a horizontal 12" wide sanding belt. I have not been able to find one showing the plane being ground on a precision machine.. But I was most impressed with one channel showing a very accurate method of "hand scraping" a Stanley #5.. I believe that "accurate scraping" produces the best results but it comes at a very high price in time and material. And if "flatness" is important to you, it may be worth it. Keep in mind tho, that the Japanese woodworker has used planes made out of wood for centuries and the results are amazing...And we know that wood is an actively moving organic material.

  Stinky sink
Posted by: KC - 03-03-2024, 12:10 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (21)

I mentioned something about smelly water a little while back.  I've now determined that it's one particular sink that stinks, not the water.  We've used the vinegar/baking soda clean several times now, and I've done that in the sink overflow as well (Kohler cast/porcelain).  No difference.  Been happening off and on for several months.  No rhyme or reason.  No problem in shower, kitchen, or sink in the laundry room.  I had this trap apart a few weeks back for a leak, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary there.

  Clogged Sink Drain
Posted by: crokett™ - 03-02-2024, 12:34 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (7)

the master bath has double lavatories.  Call them Sink 1 and Sink 2.  They both are on Studor vents.   On each sink the drain goes down through the floor of the cabinet and not back into the wall after the trap.  Sink 2 the drain is slow.  If I remove the studor vent, it is not slow.  Replacing the vent did not make a difference. Even with a new vent on it is slow. I have snaked from the top with a drain cleanig tool, down through the vent under the counter and in the cleanout just above the bottom of the cabinet.  The tool comes out clean.  Sink 1 is not slow, but when it runs for long enough air bubbles up through the trap of Sink 2 and comes out the drain in the bottom of the sink.   So where would the clog be? The toilet and shower both drain just fine.

  Salute to Allie
Posted by: Bill Holt - 03-02-2024, 10:31 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (3)

Brad's dog in the picture with the trestle frame really tugged on the "heart strings".  A week ago, I had to put down Alli, my (13 yr old yellow lab) shop dog and constant sidekick.  She enjoyed being in the shop as much as me.  Wednesday was my first day in the shop...wow, not fun.

Biscut (12 yr old) was my first shop dog, and also yellow lab.  I've really been blessed to be able to enjoy this hobby with a sidekick who never judge me, always encouraged me, and loved the trips for materials.

Give your dog a hug for me, I need it!

Smile An old fashioned gloat...

Good lord we used to have a lot of crowing on here. I have been fortunate in the past and probably conveyed it here myself. It seems the real tool gloats are harder to come by.
This one is of a rough-cut wood variety...
I needed some poplar paint grade. I answered an ad on Facebook—mostly Poplar and some maple Air dried for 20 years for $500. Didn't care for the maple but what the hay... sight unseen I offered $400 and said I would be there promptly.
They accepted... YES
Yes

My thoughts and best guess was around 340--- 360 BF. It turned out to be 440 BF. All pretty flat and around 4/4
200 BF of White Oak half of which is Quarter sawn with nice flake.
About 80 BF of maple which is curly and spalted.
120 BF of Poplar Pretty nice stuff...
40 BF of Cherry...
I am one happy camper hoping to find someplace to put it all...
