  Interior vs exterior tile
Posted by: EatenByLimestone - 02-22-2024, 09:14 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (4)

Is there any real difference between interior and exterior tile? We’re looking at redoing the exterior entryway to the house. The wife likes some interior tile. Will it last? It’s in a spot that is shielded from direct sun/weather.

  Shoot bolt question
Posted by: Marc - 02-22-2024, 11:27 AM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (5)

Hey guys, it's been a real long time since I've been here.
I hope I'm using the correct term for the parts...
I have french doors and one has the shoot bolt that goes up and the other goes down into the sill.
The builder drilled a hole in the header jamb for the bolt to go into but the hole is a bit too big and the door doesn't fit snug against the weather stripping.
I was looking for a metal "thimble" type of a cup that the shoot bolt rod can go into.
So far, all I found are cam style adjustable "shoot bolt keeps". That seems perfect. But they're all in the UK.
Are they under a different name here in the u.s.? I can't find any.
Here is what I found

  Cherry and Lye
Posted by: ed kerns - 02-21-2024, 03:22 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (19)

Hi all,
I'm building a table of Cherry wood for someone. They are looking for that 100 year old cherry look that no one wants to wait for. I've been experimenting with a lye as well as stains, shellac and such and am pretty happy with the color I'm getting from the lye wash. Have any of you been down this path and able to offer advice? So far I've only used a teaspoon of lye in 2 cups of water. Does more concentrate or additional applications darken the result? Does the sun still continue to darken Cherry after a lye finish? Do I need to neutralize (maybe wipe with vinegar) before I top coat? Is it important to maintain a wet edge to avoid striping? Does this technique do anything for or against cherry's inherent tendency to blotch? I know I need to sand back the raised grain from the water, after drying is there a recommended top coat? I have a lot of time and material into the project and will definitely pre-test any finish, but would be grateful for anyone's voice of experience. I'm not set up to spray -at least in the winter months- so any finish needs to be brushed or rubbed on.  Thank you!

  Root & resin Dragon Egg
Posted by: mtrainer90 - 02-21-2024, 02:40 PM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (2)

Making a Dragon Egg out of a chunk of Spruce(?) root that I found in the woods awhile ago and Alimilite deep pour resin. My intent was to have this been translucent purple but one drop of Alumilite red dye and blue dye go a long way and made the resin portion almost black and not able to see through like the green dragon egg I had made a few years ago with the same root.

  The correct paint
Posted by: tablesawtom - 02-21-2024, 02:23 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (20)

I bought a Delta 6 inch jointer at an auction last Saturday. It is a fairly new model  because the cutter head has jacking screws. It has sat in a barn for you knows how long. DE rusting it is going to take a while. It has four metal legs.  I have no way of taking a picture at the present time so I can not post a picture. I would like to know where I can get the correct light gray paint. Any help will be appreciated.

Round Tapered Legs made a different way
Posted by: jteneyck - 02-21-2024, 10:42 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (4)

The tapering jig I showed the other day was to prep some legs that I needed to "turn" with a round taper.  I'm a lousy turner, and I knew I would never be able to make perfectly straight tapers, and any deviation would stick out like a sore thumb.  So I decided to use my CNC to do it.  The limited Z axis capacity of my CNC called for machining in a way that didn't give the smoothest finish, but after sanding they look perfect.

I drilled 3/8" holes in the center of both ends of the legs.  I glued a 3/8" dowel in the foot and threaded a piece of 3/8" all thread in the top.  Those "arbors" are held in a simple jig I made that's mounted parallel with the X-axis of the CNC.  The CNC and me running a hand drill did the rest.

As you can see, it's pretty rough, but after 60 grit up to 220 grit it looks beautiful.

These legs are for a Lane dining table I'm building.  The design is interesting; the tapered section meets a square section at the top, and the outside corner of it is round over to match the diameter of the taper.  I rounded over that corner with a hand plane.

  A Box Project for February..
Posted by: bandit571 - 02-21-2024, 10:39 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (18)

Remember these bits and pieces?

Well, they all got resawn down a bit, from 3/4" thick, to..

Down to 1/2" or so thick...

Which left a stack of thin stuff ( dividers, trays?) for later..
Selected one of the 2 "groups" for a larger box Project...

Had a glued up panel of Ash for a lid..and started to mark up the sides, with the New & Improved Marking Gauge..

Needed a pencil to darken the lines, so both the camera and I can see them..then lay out for "Pins"..

As these corners will be through Dovetails..in Pine.

A bit of saw work..

Then chop out the waste..with a chisel...use the pins to mark out the tails, saw and chop those...then the first  Dry fit..

Right off the saw...

Note, BEFORE anything was done, I had to flatten all 4 sides...

Figured that this Stanley No. 3, Type 11 will do a good enough job.

Stay tuned...

Question Leaking Toilet Shut-off Valve--Threaded Replacement?
Posted by: grwold - 02-20-2024, 08:53 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (6)

My MOL's vacation home has a slow leak from the toilet shut-off valve.

The supply pipe is threaded copper--zoom in and you can see the threads.  But the local big box store only seems to sell compression replacements.

Should I ...
 a) look for a replacement that's threaded.
 b) get a compression replacement, and cut off the threaded pipe to repair.
 c) get MOL to sell the house ASAP?

I don't know the local code, so thought I'd reach out to the brain trust for recommendations.

Thanks for your help!

Greg

  Finally! Combination plane storage.
Posted by: Nordic - 02-20-2024, 04:39 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (15)

Decades(!) of owning these things without having proper storage.  Finally, while looking through what I want to sell off, I spied some extra red oak I had on hand and decided I'd make proper boxes for my 3 combination planes - keeping all the various parts together for each was just getting too hard to do.

Ignore the mess on the bench!  All scraps on their way to the trash bin.

Just put the "decals" on, which are really just found images off of the web printed on self-adhesive mailing labels.  Probably won't last too long, but what the heck.  It gives them a little nostalgic identity.

Talk about procrastination!  I've had one of the 45's for 30 years, the other two for nearly 20.
