Which stripper to use for nitro lacquer
Posted by: WoodworkerTom - 03-09-2024, 08:19 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (1)

Picked this up to refinish.  Had to carefully sand the drawers, ribbon magoghany and quartered teak veneer.  I need to strip the fluted columns on the sides.

Any recommendations on he best chemical stripper for this or a homemade mix?

  Briwax
Posted by: Blaine - 03-09-2024, 04:12 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (2)

I have an old dining room table with a walnut veneer top that's fairly worn in spots.  The spots have faded to the appearance of raw walnut.  I don't want to completely refinish it, but want to even out the color a bit.  It doesn't have to be perfect.

I'm thinking of using Briwax dark brown on the whole top, but I'm seeing that a can of it is nearly $30.  I'm fairly good at finishing, but haven't used wax for a colorant or to hide worn spots.  This does NOT need to be perfect.  I don't want to spend the $30 on this if there's little to no chance it will even out the colors.

Does anyone have experience with wood wax and can tell me what to expect or can give me any tips?

Posted a short the other day.  Apparently he's negotiated or received the rights back for all of his Woodworks shows and plans to put them up on Youtube!

Good news!

  Indy area auction
Posted by: ajkoontz - 03-08-2024, 04:29 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (4)

I had a big post about this and lost all my text, so this is version 2.0.
HUGE Indy area power and hand tool auction- check out link below. I am not affiliated with this auction in any way, but this collection was too good not to share. I'm going to bid on some stuff so not in my interest to spread the word on this auction but I think it would be a travesty to not try to help a local WW'er out if I can. I belive it is local pick-up only. I'm guessing this stuff will get up to market value by close on Monday anyway so let capitalism prevail I suppose. it's worth a look even if you're not bidding, and whoever is keeping score I think this guy won.

  Old House Electrical
Posted by: Willyou - 03-07-2024, 06:41 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (14)

A family member has an old house probably built in the '50s. The electrical system is not grounded. However, the panel has breakers not fuses. First question: Would the breakers likely be original or added later?
At some point in time, some of the outlets were replaced with new 3 prong outlets. They are marked "no ground". Also, the kitchen and bath have new gfci outlets.
Question 2: Would gfci circuit breakers in the panel be a good solution for better protection? I understand that regular circuit breakers on a non-grounded system will sometimes trip and sometimes not when a problem occurs.
Question 3: What do gfci breakers do that non-gfci breakers don't?
Question 4: If the answer to #2 is yes, does the panel need to be grounded for them to work? I'm unsure if the panel is presently grounded or not. I'm assuming it is not.
Question 5: If gfci breakers are installed in the panel is the system as well protected as it would be with a ground wire?

Where I am in the build part 2
Posted by: tablesawtom - 03-07-2024, 06:40 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - No Replies

I would like to thank Lonnie for inspiring me to write this. Some back ground first.  Back in the late 80s woodworkers supply made an offer for ideas for new products. If nothing else the offer was for a the product when it hit the market. About 2 years latter router lifts started showing up
I am not saying that todays lifts are not better designed or easier to produce I just find it hard to believe that they started showing up 2 years latter. Which is about the time it takes from initial concept to production. I am in that line of work.

So today here is my fence. I will admit Woodpeckers is dancing all around it. But they get more expensive by the ad on. But most fences produced, maybe refined but basically the same old fence with a few bells and whistles. There is a black turn screw that locks the screw from turning or locks the position in. In the middle is a half nut. If you push down on the half nut you free the screw and not the whole fence can be rapidly moved forward or backward out of the way. Let go and the screw engages again and the fence can be adjusted in the desired position with the blue handwheel.  I can move the fence back and then reposition it effortlessly in about 15 seconds. Discounting the time to change tools I showed and explained it for 2 reason . Maybe someone will run with it and at my age compensation although it would be nice I am not expecting anything. I chose to share it for what it is worth.
