  Road Trip
Posted by: bandit571 - 03-10-2024, 07:07 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (5)

As a way to relieve all the stress that has been building up around my household....decided to just go out on a long road trip...and try to just clear my mind, even if for a day.  Because, IF I had stayed at the house that day...I would have gone off on about anybody....just need the time to relax, and maybe look for a few tools the shop didn't have.
So, Last Friday,,filled the gas tank on the Chevy, and headed South....

Harmony, OH.   US Rt40, just before the I-70 exits....Heart of Ohio Antique Center....8 inter-connected buildings, FILLED with about any sort of Antique you might want to buy...I had to keep moving, as they were just as liable to place a Price tag on this old fart, as an Antique...so..
First Rule: if it is inside of a Locked display case....expect "Gold Plated" prices....

Like a Stanley No.45 plus 2 boxes of cutters...$195 + tax...I already had one, plus the Spokeshave.
Same booth:

Saws, anyone..

Planes?

A bit rich for me...

More planes?

A bit pricey?

From that same booth..

Walking around, came upon this...

I think this is called a face vise?

And..

A Tool Tray/Well....with a ramp to help sweep shavings out..
As for what was in this stall..stay tuned...

  Air duct cleaning
Posted by: Halfathumb - 03-10-2024, 01:30 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (4)

I'll try to keep this as short as possible. I moved out of my house, a 3 BR ranch, 1700SF on a crawl space. Over the years we had 10 cats, we're trying to sell it but cat urine odor prevails. The realtor thinks the smell is coming primarily from the air ducts. He says this because the cat room is a good distance from the kitchen where it can be smelled also. My question is, can a good cleaning of the air ducts remove the odor? Or does the duct work need to be replaced? FWIW, there are 17 air ducts.

Also, when interviewing someone to do the cleaning, what questions do I need to ask them as to what they do for the money?

Experienced information is greatly appreciated.

The one that would occasionally fail to empty the bowl.

Replaced it with a pressure assist model.

No more problems.

  Genoa Wi.
Posted by: tablesawtom - 03-10-2024, 09:57 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (6)

My wife and I went for a nice but cool spring getaway to La Cross Wi. yesterday. We went visiting as many antique stores as we could on our way, both ways actually. We took the scenic drive up highway 35 along the Mississippi from Prairie Du Chien Wi. About 10 miles south of La Cross we stopped at the small town of Genoa, and visited the Old Tool Shed Antiques store.

An old gentleman ( guessing was well in his 80s) runs it and if I was going really check things out I would bring a flash light. Lighting wasn't good at all in the old building. He has more Bedrock planes in there than Stanley's. He knows what his stuff is worth but not overpriced either. I bought 3 things and I had to go next door to get to a ATM because he doesn't take cards, only cash or checks. I saw 1 #1 but he wouldn't sell it. Last time I was there he had 3. Worth visiting if you ever get in the area.

Anyway some pictures and the flash helps.

The wall displays are from both sides and the whole store was full. Only one side of the building is open but the other side was half full and the basement has just about the same amount.

Worth stopping just to look But only open Thursdays through Saturday.

Abrasive wraps for SuperMax Drum Sander
Posted by: R Clark - 03-10-2024, 06:35 AM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (14)

Good morning, all.

I have a SuperMax 19-38 drum sander that I picked up as part of a package deal on some used WWing machines two years ago.  When I got it, it came with a stock of SuperMax-branded abrasive wraps ranging from 36 to 220 grit.  I've found that I use the 150 grit and 180 grit the most, and now I'm looking to replenish the stock.

There's a significant price difference between Klingspor's 3-pack of wraps and the SuperMax branded wraps.  Does anybody have any thoughts about performance differences between these two brands?  I've used Klingspor's in other forms before and had satisfactory results.

  Flys in the attic
Posted by: Petertaylor - 03-09-2024, 10:07 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (10)

Our uninsulated and unventilated attic has one dormer with windows. On any warm day, hundreds of flys are buzzing on the window, with thousands on the floor. If I open the window, they mostly fly out. The whole attic is clean except around the window.

The attic floor has fiberglass insulation between the joists, so the ceiling of the second floor is insulated.

We have lived here several years, and this has been happening since we moved in. We vacuum them up, but in a few weeks the floor is covered again. If we use insect spray, they all fall down dead, but the next day they are back.

Any ideas?.  Thanks

  Bandsaw blade tension spring rate
Posted by: gordon 131 - 03-09-2024, 08:26 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (11)

I am working on a couple bandsaws right now, and while I am waiting on parts for my W/T 16” , I thought I would address the blade tension spring on my 36” ASMCo bandsaw. The spring on this saw has been mush , since I rebuilt and refurbished this saw years ago.
I typically use a 1/2” blade 3tpi on bothe saws , but do have a 3/4” and even a 1” blade I believe.
I am looking into replacing the spring with a die spring.
Is there a certain spring rate that one looks for when changing the spring?? Is there any spring places people have had good luck with?

I am looking at Lee Spring and have found a few die springs that may work, they have these spring rates 235,374, lbs./. Are these spring rates in the ballpark of what a guy wants?
Thanks for any input.

Which stripper to use for nitro lacquer
Posted by: WoodworkerTom - 03-09-2024, 08:19 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (1)

Picked this up to refinish.  Had to carefully sand the drawers, ribbon magoghany and quartered teak veneer.  I need to strip the fluted columns on the sides.

Any recommendations on he best chemical stripper for this or a homemade mix?

  Briwax
Posted by: Blaine - 03-09-2024, 04:12 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (2)

I have an old dining room table with a walnut veneer top that's fairly worn in spots.  The spots have faded to the appearance of raw walnut.  I don't want to completely refinish it, but want to even out the color a bit.  It doesn't have to be perfect.

I'm thinking of using Briwax dark brown on the whole top, but I'm seeing that a can of it is nearly $30.  I'm fairly good at finishing, but haven't used wax for a colorant or to hide worn spots.  This does NOT need to be perfect.  I don't want to spend the $30 on this if there's little to no chance it will even out the colors.

Does anyone have experience with wood wax and can tell me what to expect or can give me any tips?

Posted a short the other day.  Apparently he's negotiated or received the rights back for all of his Woodworks shows and plans to put them up on Youtube!

Good news!
