  ? about multiple M&T glue-ups
Posted by: GaryMc - 02-13-2025, 06:06 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (12)

Think ladderback chair with curved uprights, three curved back pieces, a 1X2 seat support, and a bottom rung.  That's 10 M&T joints (20 glue applications) that need to be glued up at the same time.  The dry fit went together (finally) but it took these old hands quite a while, and I'm concerned about getting it all together without glue drying up or getting it all over me and everything else - despite using Titebond III with a decent set time.  Given the configuration, I do not think just doing one side at a time is feasible unless the second side follows immediately.

I'm thinking about applying glue to the tenons first, especially the end grain that normally needs two coats anyway, then the mortices.  This might mean that some of the tenons could be partially dry before completing all the joints.  Do you think this is will not compromise the strength of the joints?  Any other ideas?

1/12 straight router bit for cutting through mortise
Posted by: Bencuri - 02-12-2025, 07:10 AM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (15)

I need to cut narrow through mitters into hardwood. The mitter width should be 2mm (about 1/12"), and the thickness of the wood is 4/5". I found this router bit, but I am not sure if this is suitable indeed for the purpose?:

I have seen people cutting wood with those kind of router bits that look similar to a normal drill bit. But I found the side of the cuts were quite rough. That's why I tried to find a normal, straight type of bit.

Let this bowl guide the way
Posted by: mtrainer90 - 02-11-2025, 09:32 AM - Forum: Woodturning - No Replies

This compass repeatedly was pointed at the burn pile. With cracked wood, broken cnc bits & fitting issues, I didnt think I was going to finish this one.
The 11x2in bowl is made up of white oak with black walnut and purple heart compass rose & letters. Two 15 segment rings sit onto of the inlayed base. The bowl was finished with Myland's sanding sealer and Myland's friction polish.

  A "Pouting Chair"?
Posted by: bandit571 - 02-11-2025, 04:18 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (1)

Also during the enforced week of no computer...had a wee bit more of that KIWI Pine   1/2"x 6" x 24"....so...

A drawing of a few curvy lines...and bit of Bandsaw work..then a bit of glue, and and forest of clamps...

No metal fasteners were used...simply glued this up....

Let this sit a day, while I worked on some dovetails for a box....then..

Clean up all the rough spots, and glue joints...and try to level the 4 feet...

So that it did not rock  too badly...
Then a bit of Witch's Brew...to add a bit of colour?

Then a coat of Warm Gloss Poly...allow that to dry, then rub down with some 0000 steel wool..

Will let the Boss decide what she wants to sit in that chair...

Still learning HOW to edit photos in Windows 11....after all those years in Windows 10....Hint..they did NOT make it easier...

Thanks for looking in!

  A fancy little box
Posted by: bandit571 - 02-11-2025, 03:31 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (3)

During the week of NOT have a computer...spent a bit of time more than normal IN the shop.....Still had some leftover KIWI Pine to use up...
Like 4 strips to form the sides of a small box..

Through Dovetails on the corners...a panel cut to fit inside for a bottom...another cut to be a beveled edge lid...half of which got glued in place..

The  the lid was cut into 2 sections....with a shallow rebate all along the edges...

The "half" of the lid that was to open, needed mortises chopped to house a pair of hinges...so that as small a gap between the 2 halves could be made...

Original "Plan" was that this was to be a slide out tray...so, a small wooden peg "Knob" was installed...but...

I added a few "Extra Parts" to kind of dress it up a bit..

Like a handle to lift the lid to open the box...and a few corner details...Witch's Brew for the stain..then a coat of Warm Gloss Poly..
Was delivered to a friend Monday...what she decides to stash in it, is her business...
Thanks for looking in...

Anyone have a jig for making wide half laps?
Posted by: Dumb_Polack - 02-10-2025, 08:52 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (16)

Hi,

I'm rebuilding the lattice that sits on top of our fence.  The original just had the slats stapled where they meet and many of them have failed.  The 2nd picture shows the assembly jig I made.  You'll note that some of the squares have been removed in order to make is easy for the slat pieces to fit.  (In retrospect, I probably didn't need a square at every intersection point...oh well...I had some time on Saturday with nothing to do).

The 3rd picture shows my TS jig to cut the wide dadoes.  The problem is that I can't make a dado the width of the slats (IIRC, they're about 1 7/16" wide).  I seem to recall there's some sort of half-lap jig that allows the key to be slid over once you make the 1st cut to accommodate the entire width of the slat, but I can't seem to find it.  The front fence slides to the right somehow??  (Did the Woodsmith Shop do an episode where they made one?)

I realize it'll be a lot of bending over the TS to make my cuts.  I think I've got 4 8 feet sections and 2 smaller sections to make.  Ouch.

Also I'd rather got the TS route vs the router route as I think the TS will be more accurate, once I get the jig dialed in.

Got any plans/sites that show how to build one?
