  Case Hardening 101 ........
Posted by: BuzSaw - 08-01-2015, 06:06 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (4)

An interesting page.
Honeycombing is the worst of the defects shown. When that one strikes, there is no cure. Usually no salvageable material can be found. A plank can look perfectly sound and free of defect and be nothing but ruined wood on the inside.

Carbide, either solid or brazed-on.
Spirals ok.
Do it everyday.

HF Dust Collector - Melted Switch
Posted by: brnhornt - 08-01-2015, 02:05 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (6)

Like you I have had the HF dust collector for a long time
My switch has never gone bad, But then again I never turn off the switch
I have a remote switch to turn my collector on and off

Yes, the switch in the HF collector is subject to the problem you mentioned
The switch is just has copper contacts and is subject to corrosion and carbon build up due to the ark that happens when opening and closing of the contacts
This can lead to the switch having a higher resistance then normal and this can lead to the switch over heating

If the collector was mine, I would bypass the switch and use a remote switch.

But if you want to replace the switch, you can try and contact HF customer service and see about getting a new switch

What would be a fair price on this band saw?
Posted by: southgalawyer - 08-01-2015, 01:14 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (6)

I like THIS ONE on your local CL much better. It is a clone of a Delta. The Craftsman you show wouldn't be worth buying IMO. I'd offer $150 for the one I posted.

  orientation of wedge?
Posted by: overland - 08-01-2015, 12:53 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (1)

Orient it so the wedge will not split the chair seat (perpendicular to the mortises grain). Does that make sense? Wedge is parallel to tenon grain.

0X0 $3,350 on eBay a new record, for me
Posted by: DJChurn - 08-01-2015, 08:23 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (3)

Not to nitpick, but it went for 3,350.00, not 3500.00.

And while it's a difference of only 150.00, I think it's worth mentioning, since the point of the post is the dollar amount.

Also, this plane is not smaller than the Stanley No 1, but actually its equivalent.

  shellac and poly

IME, thats fine. I go straight to poly depending on the project, but also know that the overall final pigment didnt match - at least with maple. The projects where I applied Sealcoat first were just slightly darker overall.

Willing to bet that is the issue right there

I expect you are flutter tensioning as well.
