vibration on one or two machines could just be manufacturing variances...and the next SF machine could vibrate.

Or it could indeed mean the SF is a better balanced machine.

#3 Stanley Repurposed to Shooting Plane?

It is a bit small and light for a dedicated shooter imho but I am sure it can work. You will be limited on the size of work it can do easily though...

I finally gifted myself with one and now I'm considering buying a wall mount but after looking online I realize I don't know enough to go out and buy one.
Any experience and advise here?

Yes I know to make certain it's firmly mounted on studs.

I had to make my own. Couldn't find one that fit our criteria.

Now they make a good variety of them.

I guess I would refer to the kit numbers and instructions in your manual. There are some cheaply made kits out there I wouldn't trust.

Anyone use 5 gal shop vac for dust collector?
Posted by: Pirate - 09-30-2015, 07:54 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (4)

I have used old shop vacs in a similar application but 5 gallon Is a little small for a planer but other than that it's ok.

I have one of the imported seperator cyclones on one for the router table cause the dc from a shop vac works way better than the dust collector does. It's on a small vac base and works fine. The shape of the container doesn't matter when the seperator is on top.

The best seperator I have used is the one direct from china. Usually around $20 shipped. Less pressure drop and works great. No dust past it and it has a more inclined inlet shape to create a downward spiral of air.

I came up selling ShopSmith in the 70's. So that name for me was R J DeCristoforo. Back then we used a lot of RJ's tricks and tips.

Some links to R J's resume There actually have been many putting it in writing through the years, and as now, many of the revolutionary new concepts, just aren't

Grinding LN fish-tail chisels on Tormek
Posted by: bgeva - 09-29-2015, 08:49 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (2)

I made a small batch of these this past winter, mostly for the pig stickers but it holds the fish tails just fine. There is a small notch on the bottom for riding on the Tormek bar. It can go from the grinder right to the stones. I traded one to Admiral, I wonder if he has tried it out yet. I'll see if I have any other photos.

Jim

Here it is with a bench chisel on the Tormek.
