My local ACE hardware has it. My local HD has several Minwax and Rustoleum rattle can products.

  MDF for Raised Panel application?
Posted by: Spokaneman - 10-01-2015, 01:11 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (10)

I'm sure others will chime in but I've used mdf for raised panels that were painted and they have held up with no issues. Used a combination of BIN primer and Benjamin Moore Advance paint. Used poplar for the rails/stiles.

Is Doug Thompson still in business?

I sure hope so. Just saw him at the symposium. He is a one man shop and life sometimes gets in the way, sometimes things get lost in email. You could try his phone.

In what do you store your mixed finishes?
Posted by: Bill Lyman - 10-01-2015, 07:12 AM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (7)

Canning jars. I do some canning from time to time, so I have a good collection. I use a black marker on the lid to ID the finish and date.

  Five piece drawers anyone
Posted by: jteneyck - 09-30-2015, 08:16 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (5)

My only experience with this kind of drawer construction is seeing it on cheep factory made furniture usually made out of softwoods. The sliding dovetail joint aways seemed to come loose. The drawer would stay together as the joint does a nice job of trapping the sides to the front; but the drawer would rack every time it was pulled on and eventually would self destruct.
I wonder if it was poorly fitted joints that caused the glue holding the sliding dovetail to fail or just that what one has in this kind of construction is an all end-grain joint.

  plywood repair question
Posted by: YSU65 - 09-30-2015, 07:51 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (6)

Tom----I feel badly about your problem, but have to ask you---if that veneer is so thin already, what do you think is going to happen in the future when things are placed, dropped, or scratched across that top in the future??? I think you're right to be hesitant considering how the filler material may react to a steam iron. Frankly, I think today's plywood, with it's micro-thin veneers is a poor choice for a furniture top.

My suggestions----if it's not too late, I'd replace the top with solid wood. If the project is almost finished, I'd consider buying some veneer to go over the top. They sell self-stick and backed veneer which is much easier to work with for a first timer. Hope this helps.

Blanket Chest - missing hidden details

I'd probably just go with a guide on each side, looks a little wide for a single center mount one.

  Robust top coat for table

Check the GF website first, they have a list of local dealers....I was really surprised to see a local consignment shop on their list. (Caution, in my case the selection was very small). But another source is Woodworker's Hardware, they carry the stuff and I ordered a quart from them. They ship quickly. Klingspor also carries it.
