"How many tools do you need"... she asked!

Yeah, but wait until "Shape" magazine runs an article on how you can build up your shapely womanly parts by swinging a mallet, and then she'll tell you to get down to that toolkit.

  Unsteamed walnut in socal
Posted by: jussi - 12-17-2015, 04:56 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (1)

Last I looked I could not even find decent walnut, let alone steamed or not. I looked at Austin Hardwoods and thought it was near fire wood quality at a price about $10/BF. Of course ended up passing walnut and got quarter sawn sapele instead.

First Quilted Maple Piece and Questions for Experts

Great frame

I've done some with birds eye and tiger maple and like the more natural lighter coloring. But, finishing is very much a matter of personal aesthetics. I like a 1# cut coat of Garnet shellac followed by a waterborne finish. One of the nicest jobs I have seen was a friend who applied a 1# cut coat of Thai seed followed by sanding back (see

http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/p...the-maple/

for the technique) followed by a couple coats of Garnnet shellac and then a WB clear topcoat.

  Dyeing wood ornaments
Posted by: Birdseye Bill - 12-17-2015, 01:21 PM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (4)

I have done dyed ornaments for the last three or four years. This ornament was done with aniline dye dissolved in alcohol. The dyes are expensive up front but as near as I can tell shelf life is pretty much forever.

These ornaments are dyed with stamp pad ink I got at a local office supply store.

The only drawback to the ink is available colors are limited.

More aniline dye ornaments.

I've heard of guys using food coloring or the RIT dyes but I have never used either.

Why do I get cloudy patches in my CA finish?

Bubba

I had the same problem several years ago but do not remember why Sorry

I should ask how many coats you put on first before sanding?

I admit, I do flat work and know nothing about turning. I've looked at this cup/glass for a while and I am stumped as to how it was done. I could see turning the bowl but how are the "branches and stem" done?

Little help for the ignorant...

I would guess the "tree" was turned to that shape and then whatever the artist didn't want was carved or sawn away

Martin

Get a Jacobs chuck for your lathe, hole the blank in a chuck jaws and drill at a low speed backing out to clear the chips. I use white acrylic craft paint to paint the tubes. No problems getting the CA to stick, get them in fast. Best of luck and if you need further help let me know.

Hmm...clever idea!

How'd you saw the bodies so that they were 90 degrees to the table(or feet in this case)?
