Looking for most durable brushed finish
Posted by: MsNomer - 12-28-2015, 06:42 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (4)

General Finishes Enduro Clear Poly. Water clear to start and forever. Chemical durability about equal to EnduroVar and higher abrasion resistance. Available in quarts. Literature says spray only but I've had no trouble applying it on smaller panels with a foam brush.

Found this one in the wilds of Illinois
Posted by: oarlock - 12-28-2015, 04:40 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (1)

Nice find and handy, especially if you do veneer work. I see a few Goldenberg tools in Illinois, so I assume somebody was importing them. If you didn't already know, Goldenberg is a French company.

Just last summer I found a very nice Goldenberg panel raiser. It is much smaller than an American / British panel raiser, but made from some type of oak and quite heavy.

My rule on clean, user wood planes is to wipe the dust off and use - no oils, waxes, stains etc. I would use hide glue on the handle.

  when does best sanding happen
Posted by: Demps - 12-28-2015, 04:33 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (5)

The usual process is this: dimension the stock (cut to length, joint, plane); cut and assemble the joints; sand and finish.

It's always risky to try to sand too much before assembly because inevitably the workpieces get bumped and scratched as you move them around. I expect that you'll want to remove milling marks, tear-out, and other visible surface flaws with a relatively coarse grit on your drum sander before you do your joinery--that's part of your stock prep. But you should probably plan to do your final sanding (by hand or with a handheld device) after assembly.

Rember as well that detectors have a finite life span. Replace them when they age out.

  Piano Hinge installation
Posted by: sroxberg - 12-28-2015, 03:21 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (5)

I like to stick it down with double stick tape to make sure it doesn't move, then starting in the middle install a few screws. Then do the same for the other side. With just a few screws installed if its wrong you can start over and only have to deal with a few misplaced screw holes instead of all of them.

trying to hold it in place without the tape and installing screws I've had it shift.

That is a pretty cool setup. Seems like it would take a while to setup though.

  Making Knives & Leather Carving?
Posted by: David Stone - 12-28-2015, 11:13 AM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (2)

Stone,

Check out www.woodbarter.com, it's another good woodworking forum (created for swapping and "bartering" wood"), but there are lots of good subforums, including Knife Making. Lots of really nice knives made and shown, and the makers are not shy about telling their process and offering up sound advice for others to try their hand at making a knife.

I've watched several of this guys videos...

Post up some pics of your nephews knives!
