  The Legs were Always There
Posted by: C. in Indy - 10-07-2023, 09:06 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (5)

I'm fixing up a super-plain box that was in my pile of stuff.

I decided to add some legs, by removing some wood that was not legs.   I started with some 1/2" drilled holes, then worked on material removal.  My coping saw was a hassle, and I found a chisel went a lot faster.

Work so far:

  Attic over porch air barrier?
Posted by: DogwoodTales - 10-06-2023, 08:24 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (2)

My attic extends over my front porch. There was some type of foil faced paper that was installed between the attic over the conditioned space and the porch attic. It was partly falling down and old and brittle and I needed to get in there and so I took it down during some pre-move remodeling.
The ceiling above the conditioned living space is insulated (and more insulation to be installed soon, see my other thread about that). Porch roof isn’t insulated obviously and won’t be.
I haven’t yet found an answer to this in a web search so - do I need to out some type of barrier back up between the attic over the living space and the porch attic? What good does it do? The entire attic is vented and not conditioned.
Thanks

A Tale of Two Tables - two old pieces of furniture tie generations of families togeth

My main focus in the shop is to make and repair musical instruments. But it wasn't always so and other projects creep in on the side. Here I repair a piece of furniture and repurpose another.

  Looking for cigar shave
Posted by: gtrboy77 - 10-05-2023, 06:04 PM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - Replies (2)

Looking for either a Milllers Falls cigar shave #2 or a Woodjoy version. I just want one that has a straight blade and not a curved one like on the Millers Falls cigar shave #1.

  Stain blocking
Posted by: JTTHECLOCKMAN - 10-03-2023, 10:41 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (2)

I have a cabinet that I am working on and it is made of soft maple, I believe.. (I have included a couple photos) I used bloodwood as some accent pieces. I started this project about 10 years ago and and finally getting around to finishing it I hope. At that time my thoughts were to just put a clear finish on it and be done with it. But now that I decided I want to put it in my den and the walls will be a light grey color, I was thinking of staining it a light grey. But I worry about the bloodwood detail. I do not want to lose the red color. So my question is there a way to stain just the maple and not have bleedoff into the bloodwood?? Or should I just stick with original idea and go natural. Now if I were to stain what is a good stain to use?  I am thinking oil for better penetration and be able to highlight the grain some? I will be doing a satin lacquer finish as top coat. Any tips or pointers is helpful. Thanks.

  Re-attach Stone Tread To Step?
Posted by: David Stone - 10-02-2023, 08:24 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (5)

The stone on this outdoor step came unattached.  What's the best way to re-attach it?  Mortar?  Liquid nails?

My Yard is Depressing -- Literally
Posted by: David Stone - 10-02-2023, 08:12 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (12)

I live in the suburbs of NY.  I noticed a few months back that about 1' circle of grass was lower than the rest.  Over time, it sank lower, and when I put my weight on it, it compacted.  Eventually, I dug out a hole, about 1' in circumference and 2' deep.  When I got down that far, the dirt was very loose and there was a tunnel running under my yard -- about 4" in circumference.  I have chipmunks and rabbits in the area, so I'm assuming one of them dug the tunnel.  But I guess there could be some other cause of erosion -- although my yard is a high point in the area.

I'm not sure what to do about this.  I can fill in the hole, but I don't think that will stop the erosion.  Although the part that sank was only about a 1' circle, I can see that for an area of about 3-4' around the whole (not area, I should say radius), the yard is sloping down.

What do I do about this?  Dig out the entire area where the yard is sloping?  Fill what I can see of the tunnel with gravel?
Do I need to check if I have a larger problem of soil erosion under my house?  My neighborhood was developed in the 1920s, and it's pretty close packed (about 1/4 to 1/2 acre lots).  I'd be surprised if there was a major sink hole forming under the house.

Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.
