  Buying Electric Range/Stove
Posted by: branchacctg - 11-17-2023, 12:08 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (23)

Planning on buying a new Electric range/stove in the next month or two. Current avocado green is over 40 years old and developing problems.  Nice thing about it was that it had two ovens,(wife liked that).  Looking for suggestions brands/models, things to avoid.  Never bought one before, they all came with the various houses that we bought.  Thanks in advance.

  bed rail hardware
Posted by: JosephP - 11-14-2023, 11:41 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (19)

Did a search, bud didn't find hits.  What do folks prefer for bed rail hardware - hooking the rails to the head and foot?

I think I like the look of these because it seems like the way they taper, they will pull everything tighter with weight:
https://www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/har...em=00S0222

The Lee Valley hardware has rounded edges while Rockler and Woodcraft have square corners meaning it is necessary to chisel out the corners...not a huge deal, but all else equal, I'd rather not.

Or should I be looking at a different style?

  Chess board plans
Posted by: ed kerns - 11-14-2023, 09:36 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (6)

Hi all, I'm looking to build a chess board as a Christmas gift. The board plan I'm considering comes from Woodsmith #132 December of 2000 (I think). I'd be happy to buy it from them, the problem is, I can't seem to find that specific plan on any of the Woodsmith sites. (There are a couple of other chessboard plans) I did find reference to the plans being used by a Woodnet user "Bope" back in 2018. I'm not sure if they are still in the group. Anyone know if there is still a source for those plans?
I'm also open to using another plan, and could certainly just wing it, but I'm concerned about wood movement and would rather use a tried and true method of dealing with it. Thanks!

seeking plans for a good passive acoustic amplifier for cell phones
Posted by: iclark - 11-14-2023, 06:33 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (8)

Back when LOML and I were still using flip phones, I used to see lots of posts about wooden passive acoustic amplifiers that would cradle and amplify smart phones. Now, they seem hard to find and I am wondering about making some as presents.

Does anyone have a pointer to a plan that they made and that worked well for them?

thanks

  Grizzly recalling >21,000 wood lathes
Posted by: iclark - 11-14-2023, 05:55 PM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (9)

I also posted this upstairs in Woodworking.

From Family Handyman

Quote:According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website, three models from Grizzly are subject to the recall:
  • Grizzly Industrial Wood Lathe, Model Number G0584;
  • Grizzly Industrial Wood Lathe, Model Number G0462;
  • Grizzly Shop Fox Wood Lathe, Model Number W1758.
All are variable-speed, electric wood lathes with a green or white bed, cast iron legs, an extendable tool rest and a swivel headstock.

...

Why Are Grizzly Lathes Being Recalled?
According to the CPSC: “The wood lathes cutting tool can break, posing an injury hazard due to projectiles that can strike the user and bystanders, and a laceration hazard to the user who could come into direct contact with the cutting tool.”

So far, Grizzly has received four reports of the cutting tool breaking, and one reported injury.

What To Do If You Have a Recalled Grizzly Lathe
If you own one of the recalled lathe models, the CPSC urges you to stop using it immediately. Then, contact Grizzly by email at recalls@grizzly.com or phone at (888) 615-7944.
Grizzly will provide you a free repair kit including an upgraded faceplate, tool rest and base. The company will cover shipping. You must repair the lathe yourself or hire someone to do it.

A little bit more info on the FH website (including links).

If someone finds out what "wood lathe cutting tool" can break, please let us know.

Smile Bowl Gouges
Posted by: Arlin Eastman - 11-14-2023, 02:46 PM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (4)

What bowl gouges and sizes do you use?

I have the Jamieson 5/8 which he game me about 6 years ago and still have about 2" of gouge left after almost constant use for a while.
https://lylejamieson.com/product/signatu...n-handled/

One other that I like is the 5/8 Henry Taylor gouge and it works great also.  Have had it for almost 7 years and still good tool length left
https://www.packardwoodworks.com/104023.html

Also have the 5/8, 1/2, and 3/8 Sorby gouges that I use quite often as well.  I do not care for them like the other two but they still work

none of them hold an edge or last as long as the Jamieson and Henry Taylor ones.

  Arm R Seal ?

A few weeks ago I applied 3 coats of Arm R Seal to the inside of some drawers. How do I get rid of the odor? I have the 8 drawers spread out in the shop to air out. As soon as I close the drawer the smell comes back.

Photo Screen Door Frame Repair (PICS)
Posted by: bpatters69 - 11-12-2023, 11:16 AM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (5)

Hello All,

I was about to re-screen the bottom screen of my screen door when I realized that the support bar (2nd image) was loose. I took a closer look at the support bar and I noticed that the screws had rusted and there was nothing for the screws to connect to on the end of the support bar. I am attaching some pictures. Is there some type of insert I buy for the end (1st image)? You can see the holes where I removed the two screws in the 1st image.

Thanks, Bill
