  Sediment Filter Problems
Posted by: crokett™ - 12-18-2023, 10:56 AM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (20)

I have had a sediment filter on my water line for about 5 years.  It's a GE brand. For the last several months I seem to be going through filters much more quickly but after these last couple filter changes I am wondering if the water is bypassing the filter.   Until early this year I was changing the filter ~12 weeks.  In the summer it was 6-8 because of the watering of the plants.   The last 2 were changed at about 3 weeks.  Usually it's time to change the filter when the water pressure drops a little.  The filter itself is pretty much evenly coated.   These last 2 time around there was some brown water but no pressure drop, and looking at the filters they were relatively clean, or at least I've seen much worse on the outside. The brown water was also in spurts.   Flush a toilet or take a shower and it would go away for a day or two.  There was a fair bit of sediment settled at the bottom of the housing and the filter seemed more brown than usual on the inside. I am wondering if the housing is starting to bypass.  The filters are an offbrand from Amazon, but I've been using them for at least 18 months.  Home Depot stopped selling the GE products and these filters are also half the cost.

A new project is now "in my head".... I'll see if I can make it work.

  Porter Cable routers
Posted by: tablesawtom - 12-17-2023, 04:07 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (13)

While doing some research for a different post I realized that I didn't see any Porter Cable routers listed anywhere. The PC690 was once the go to, when purchasing a router. I heard that Black @ Decker had pretty much destroyed the brand after they bought them out, but I though the router would still be around.  At least I though that it was Black and Decker. Anyway is the PC router completely gone from the market?

Also I also didn't find any single speed 3 1/4 HP routers for sale. The ones I found were variable speed. Dose anyone still make a single speed big dog any more?

  Refinishing: Wishful thinking?
Posted by: Gary G™ - 12-16-2023, 08:02 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (3)

I’ve been asked to refinish a wood vanity top in a bathroom.
It was finished originally with Arm-R-Seal Satin Topcoat varnish.
Over time, a couple of areas have had excessive water creating splotches.

Can the finish be sanded where it’s worn and blended into the good areas or will the entire surface need to be stripped?

  Resaw Leftovers
Posted by: bandit571 - 12-15-2023, 11:48 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (6)

Had a few cut-offs from the November Project...decided to resaw them up/down..

And, since the tablesaw was having issues staying at 90 degrees..these all went through a friend's Lunch Box Planer...so that they all were the same thickness..

All except this fancy grain board...tablesaw to saw a kerf, then..

A Cardio Workout to split it apart...

Planes and Beltsander to flatten this out...no way was it going near that Planer..as for the rest..

Wound up with about a dozen long blanks....and..

About 8 shorter blanks...all about 1/4" thick...
Not sure about the Live /Barky Edged stuff..

Might just trim it off, and save the rest for drawer parts..

Sorted through the longer blanks...

These 3 seemed to look good enough for one panel...and..

These could make a second panel....

Those 2 fancy panels?   One has a split growing in it..might just rip along that..and make 2 drawer fronts...

And the one with out the split?   Maybe the top of a case?

Stay tuned...

Photo Dewalt 735. Upgrade or Replace?
Posted by: Mike 55 - 12-15-2023, 11:25 AM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (10)

Hi all,

I have an issue with my DeWalt 735 planner. I’m getting ridges on the wood and while they sand off easy, it’s a concern. I’ve had this machine for 2 years with no issues and after replacing the knives the issue comes back. I don’t store the wood vertically where it can pick up debris and the ends are cut off. Also, my garage floor has an epoxy finish. I don’t know what can be nicking the blades after just a few passes.

So, my question is, should I look to upgrade the cutter head to a helical head or look to buy a new planer with the helical head. I searched out some models from Grizzly, Jet and Shop Fox. None of them received stellar reviews. Am I just wasting my money looking to upgrade the cutter? The cost of the 735 + the new cutter head puts the unit over 1K. I can buy any of the above for a lot less.

I’m spoiled as before I retired and downsized my basement shop sported a 20” Powermatic 209HH. It would never fit into my garage.
