  220V plug wire question
Posted by: TyG - 12-26-2023, 02:31 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (13)

Hey all,
I am putting in a 220v plug for a Lincoln BuzzBox welder. 50amp breaker. I would like to run across a two car garage, say 30' total run. I was planning on using 6 AWG wire for the two hots. Should I also use 6 AWG for ground wire also?

Waterstone grit Norton vs Shapton ceramic
Posted by: Ricky - 12-26-2023, 01:12 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (11)

I got a 20 year old Norton combo waterstone.  4k/8K.. I bought a shapton pro kuromaku 12K a year ago.  Was prepping the back of
a new Japanese chisel I bought and working up through the grits. At 8K the Norton gave it a nice mirror polish.  I thought the shapton 12K would
take it to a higher level of polish.  Nope.  Looked a little bit hazier after using it.  I  guess these grit levels aren't standardized.

  Aging joints and shop shoes

Steel hips, bad knees, lower back, concrete slab all trying to squeeze my woodworking.  Would like some good advice on a new pair of shoes from anyone similarly afflicted?

  Dresser restoration
Posted by: WoodworkerTom - 12-25-2023, 03:35 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (4)

I picked up a highly figured QSWO dresser from early 1900s for free.  No markings on it at all.  Guessing it came from Grand Rapids.

Drawer bottoms are not glue ups, they look like rotary cut poplar but 1/4" thick.  Did manufacturers cut trees that thick for sheet stock?

Drawer fronts and top are solid wood qswo veneered with nicer stock.  I thought the top was plywood because I saw three distinct layers.  Turns out it's a sandwich of solid wood all oriented in same direction.

It needed a lot of work but very fun project.

  Please critique my bed design
Posted by: BrentDH - 12-25-2023, 12:41 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (21)

I am about to start building a bed and just wanted to throw my design out there for comments and see if there is anything I haven't thought of or improvements I could make.

This is a queen sized bed.  The top of the mattress is 27" off the floor.  The overall height of the headboard is 49 3/4" and the footboard is 25 1/2".  The side rails stick 1" above the platform to keep the mattress from sliding around and they are 6 1/2" wide to accommodate the 6" version of the bed rail fasteners shown below.  Which brings me to my biggest question.  Is that 6 1/2" board with those fasteners sufficient to prevent racking?

Any other comments/suggestions are welcome as well.

  Rust Hunt "Trophy"
Posted by: bandit571 - 12-25-2023, 11:05 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - No Replies

Was picked up the other day, in Urbana, OH...was on a Road Trip...stopped at the 2 side by side Antiques stores in town....WAS walking around with some Gimlet style drills ($10! for 3)  when I spotted this ...."thing"

Since I was on the lookout for tools I DON"T have....placed the drills back on a shelf, and this went to the Cashier with me..

$16.09 counting sales tax?

Seller has a bad habit of spraying the old tools he sells with a coat of Clear Coat (Yuck, PITA to remove, too)

Cigar shave...solid steel, handles do not come off...one piece body, 2 slotted bolts, and the cutter....price tag said it was "Sharp"

And..it is...mostly....but it is also badly chipped..

Can't find much of any logos...there is a faint "F A..." left...Did Millers Falls make an all steel version of their No. 1 or No. 2 Cigar Shaves?

I might try to clean up the edge of the cutter, later today....and see if the rest of the clear coat can be removed....along with the chippy edge.

Any clues as to WHO  made this?

  Eggy water
Posted by: Gary G™ - 12-23-2023, 04:24 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (19)

Recently started having a very slightly eggy (sulphur) smell when running hot water.
It’s not all the time and it’s only the hot.
We’re on a deep well with a Kinetico water softener using Rust-removing salts and a 30 micron sediment filter before the house.

I’m thinking it’s probably the hot water heater anode rod rather than the water per se.

If I run pure cold or drink directly from an outside spigot (either filtered by the Kinetico or not), the water is delicious and has no discernible smell.

Also, there are times when the house might not be used for a couple of weeks so no water use.

Is this a good guess?
Any testing I can do?
Any inline filters I could put on the supply coming off the hot water heater?
Something else I should consider?

  Bathroom Faucet Comes Loose
Posted by: David Stone - 12-23-2023, 11:35 AM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (6)

Hi, the faucet/handles in my bathroom sink are coming loose from the sink. I go underneath and tighten the nut, but in a few weeks it becomes loose again and the faucet/handles slide a bit. (This is not a leak issue with the faucet.). Someone told me there is a tape to put around the threads that will hold the nut on tight, but I can’t find what type. (Again, not a leak issue, so I’m pretty sure I don’t want teflon tape.)

Any ideas?
