  VFD Issues
Posted by: Bill Holt - 02-05-2024, 02:34 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (6)

Powermatic 3520B was running fine, next morning...not.
A friend, an electrical engineer, isolated the problem to the VDF.  I see a new VDF is about $300.  I am highly intimidated by electrical controls.  What options does the WN BrainTrust suggest?

SOLD FS: Buffalo Forge 15” Bench Top Drill Press SOLD
Posted by: Rick_B - 02-05-2024, 01:57 PM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - Replies (2)

DRILL PRESS IS SOLD

I am offering a Buffalo Forge 15” bench top drill press for sale. This is a newly refurbished machine. parts were obtained and included. The press has a tilt table, table lock, quill lock and 5 speeds. The published speeds are 6300, 3400, 1725, 900 and 460 but I’m not sure if there were high and low versions of this machine.

I used a Sears motor I had – ½ HP, split phase, 1725 RPM. The motor was also completely disassembled, cleaned and painted. I added a Cutler Hammer overload switch to it.

Included is a new belt, new motor mount studs, 6A Jacobs taper mount chuck with a release nut and chuckIt was completely disassembled, cleaned, painted and reassembled. Where necessary period correct key. The complete spindle assembly was replaced due to a previous owner threading the taper mount and essentially destroying the spindle. The spindle is now registering .001” run out on the spindle taper nose. The replacement spindle was the largest outlay in this refurb and that is reflected in the asking price.

I am asking $350 which should net me $0.50 an hour in labor
Smile. Willing to listen to reasonable offers. Please feel free to request additional pictures or information.

Thanks for looking
Rick

  Vintage Delta Tenon Jig (SOLD)
Posted by: Dave Diaman - 02-05-2024, 12:27 PM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - Replies (5)

I have a classic Delta Rockwell tenon jig I’m selling. This one of the old heavy models but has been setting in a box and never used. I’m selling it for $200.00. If you want it shipped I can ship it. It will be coming from Bel Air, MD zip 21014 if you want to get a shipping quote so you know what shipping will cost. It will weigh roughly 40 lbs I believe. For some reason I’m having issues posting photos. I can send photos if you PM me with an email address if cell number.

One of those Anarchist's Bar Stools
Posted by: C. in Indy - 02-05-2024, 01:24 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (7)

I got the Anarchist's Design Book from Lost Art Press a few weeks ago.  I'm liking it, and I had a hope of making a good bar-stool.
Schwarz has a chapter that said you can make one for $8 or so; I went over that somewhat, but could have probably done it if I tried.

I do like the design and I copied his leg angles exactly.  The foot-rungs I re-positioned slightly to match my wife's shorter legs.
I varied certain techniques but overall honored the design, including a pretty comfortable slight backward tilt to the seat.

My wife is liking it, but isn't really keen on the rungs as the sole footrest.  So we'll be adding a smaller stool in front of this, for her feet

  Jet Chip Collector
Posted by: ajkoontz - 02-01-2024, 05:53 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (12)

So Woodcraft is selling these for $30. It was listed on their website a week or so ago but now I can't find it online. The Indianapolis Woodcraft had maybe 20 left if anyone is local (or your local store may have inventory). I bought one today on a whim since it was '$150 savings'. My understanding is this is more or less a dust deputy type gizmo, is that correct? I was planning on making some sort of shop vac/ dust deputy set-up. But, I also have a Jet canister DC, with the vortex cone add-on. Anybody think I should go with in-line with my big dust collector, or will it not make that much of a difference? My biggest hesitation to add it to my jet is I'll have to re-think/ re-arrange all my major stationary tools to fit it in. I'd do it if it makes a huge difference but I can't see it improving my current set-up enough to make it worthwhile. I also have ideas of sometime converting my lower bag to a trash can/ bin, which I think is the main benefit to using something like this Jet product.

Question Worms in Dry Cherry
Posted by: grwold - 02-01-2024, 09:23 AM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (4)

A neighbor offered me some cherry, out of his firewood pile.  I started turning a blank cut from one of the pieces yesterday, and found, among all the worm holes through the sapwood, a living worm.  This wood's been in my garage for a bit over a year, and was in the neighbor's stack for some time before that, so it's quite dry.

Two questions:

1. Should I be concerned about live worms messing up my house (garage storage, basement lathe) or the bowl I'm trying to turn?

2. The cherry's very hard, and I'm finding it tears out easily with a roughing gouge.  Is that mostly an issue with tool sharpness, or are there methods I should know for working around this aspect?

  20" Rip saw wanted
Posted by: Bryan F. - 01-30-2024, 01:36 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (10)

Been looking for a 18" or 20" panel saw filed for rip.  I can find plenty of 18 and 20s filed cross cut but the rip filed are rare.  Not far enough in my hand tool journey to change the geometry on a saw plate.  I usually cruise Jim Bode Tools, Hyperkitten, and Union Hill Antique Tools. But no luck.  There is a set of 20" LNs, rip and cross cut, on Ebay the guy only wants $550 each
Big Grin  Any suggestions or better yet anybody have one they want to part with.  Looking for good user, I'm not a collector by any means, despite what my wife thinks.
