  Working with Butternut

Never had a problem with it. Hand planning results in a silky smooth surface. It also sands really easy, which makes it easy to leave an uneven surface if your not careful.

Made this one this morning.

It's not an end table but maybe you can modify it.

Perhaps you could give an idea of the sort of pieces you like?

Luan is too soft for a writing surface.

White plastic laminate on the surface, anything you want on the edges.

I would go back to the cabinet shop, if they didn't want to do the work for you they would tell you.

Sounds like you figured it out.

I would build it pretty close to the way you describe it.

I use a very hi tech method -- a slight tap with the hand in the direction it needs to go.

Not Sure if this belongs here - Apologies if not

This will be interesting to see what others have to say. My thoughts: there will have to be a cleaning after the removal of the old finish, something strong enough to reduce the contamination....maybe a complete stripping. Then the shellac based primer should solve the adhesion problem, but I'm not sure it's durable enough for outdoor use (never worked very well for me like that). So, I'm not sure what the proper steps would be, maybe an oil based primer (scratch that, your in CA.). Left out of this, of course, is why in the world would someone put ArmorAll on a garage door, but that's probably a different post. You might also try this question down in Home Improvement for some more opinions.

Parafin interfering with water based dye on Hal Taylor rocking chair
Posted by: Ken Vick - 08-14-2015, 09:41 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (3)

Hi Ken,

I had this problem on the first chair I made, it would not absorb the Danish Oil on those spots, took quite a bit of work to clean it up.

My solution has been to add the paraffin after the fact, once the finish is on. The slats will move in the slot slightly without the lubrication. I put a strip of blue tape along the seat side and melt the wax and using a wood skewer drip it into the hole, while flexing the slat, seems to seep in quite nicely.

This is my solution.
