Poplar takes stain very well. But how dark "black stain" is your grandson looking for? If the answer is "Very dark." I'd use milk paint and then topcoat it with a clear finish. GF's milk paint and High Perf. Poly are a great combination for a truly black finish. If the answer is "Dark, but not opaque." I'd think about GF's Ebony Gel Stain, followed by HP Poly.

Wooden Plane Terminology Question |

A start is a little iron or lignum button at the toe of the plane that you'd strike with a hammer to release the blade.
I think the handle bolt is a reinforcing bolt that was put down through the tote to strengthen it.

I need to come up with an idea for a new desk/work space for myself and my new computer. I have an 8' wall space to work with.
Pictures and/or suggestions are appreciated. I prefer straight line areas. Will probably go with a tall book case at the end of the desk.

The main thing is I can't get a visual on how the carriage bolts work with raising and lowering the bed. Any advise will help and thanks, Sandra

I called Fein and aparantly they have a 3 year warranty so it is covered under warranty. I just have to send it in.
It only has probably 10 or so hours of use on it. I only used it with Mirka Ceros. I went thru 3 Mirka Ceros and had problems with all 3 so finally just got my money back on that. But it makes me wonder if the problems with the Ceros caused the problem with the Fein vac..Donno.
The guy did say the speed control is about $200.

Bondo on porch column |

The answer - maybe. Depends on the size of the repair and how well you got out the rotten part. I think you will see the repair - bondo and wood don't move the same. I think you are going to have to repair it again in the future. The next one I would cut out the old part and fit in a wood patch. The bondo can be used to fill in the joint line.
At least the bondo will not rot.

If the bank is local, go to the bank, and try to get payment for it directly. If there is money, they SHOULD either give you cash, or convert it to a cashier check which you could then deposit with little issue.
Id do this before you go to him. If there is no money, go to him and say the check is bogus, whats up.
Alot of people dont understand how funds availability works with bank accounts, maybe its as simple as he deposited a check, and the funds wernt cleared.
If he is a jerk about it, you can put it up for collection at the bank where its drawn off of....its costly though. They hold the check, and when funds are in the account, they clear the check (kind of how a lien works) but the fee was ridiculous last I saw.
Or there is small claims court. Should be cut and dry to get a judgment, since he wrote you a check.....but trying to collect....thats the fun part.
Good luck. Hopefully funds wernt available, and you can just go cash it at his bank.
