3/4" shaper spindle spinning 1 1/4" bore cutters?
Posted by: Kansas City Fireslayer - 08-30-2015, 03:38 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (6)

I don't think the HP makes any difference. I have a 2HP 1" spindle shaper and it will run 1-1/4" bore cutters just fine.

I think it really depends on the size of the cutter. 1-1/4" cutters offer a much better cutting angle because of their size, but they can be pretty massive for a Delta 3/4" spindle. More than anything, we aren't talking about a machine with massive bearings and a solid spindle. If you had a 3/4" spindle on a massive old shaper, it would be a different story. The Deltas don't offer as much support and there was a reason they sold a solid 1" cartridge and spindle for they machine.

I could see running the cope cut on the Delta, but I wouldn't put a panel raiser on it with a 1-1/4" bore.

  cost of hot tub
Posted by: EricU - 08-30-2015, 01:03 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (8)

Ours didn't seem to cost that much, but it was a fair amount of work. In fact, I don't remember our electric changing much when we bought it, or when we turned it off. But with the weekly checking of PH and chemicals balances, and then adjusting that stuff to whatever was needed, I probably spent an hour or 2 just keeping that stuff squared away..... and that stuff can be expensive. Ours was in a breezeway, so it didn't get the direct winter blast...but it was still quite cold out there. That said, ours also didn't get used very much...maybe once a month when it was busy...that's probably why I thought the maintenance was a PITA. I wound up giving it away. Then, when we moved; the numbnutz PO of this house also had a hot tub, but it was built into a small room in the basement....he put the hot tub in, and then finished the walls around it. I had to cut it up to get it out.

Whoa. That's not cool. Have you checked with Jet? Wonder what they'd have to say about it.
I have an Xacta - for several years now - but haven't had any issues. Do you use it daily?

Might be to exchange that old and likely expired tank for a new one. Perhaps I'm missing something though.

Original Colors for a Miller's Falls Mitre Box 16-1/2 (pre-1917)?
Posted by: ncosman - 08-29-2015, 09:26 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (3)

I saw that one on eBay. I thought the price decent bearing in mind it came with a saw.

Here is my #15 1/2 pre-rebuild ..

I am unconcerned about originality in my rebuild (hence not "restoration"). The original is quite drab - I hate to say it, but yours looks the correct colours. I have made a few small changes - nothing that cannot be returned to original. I am finishing up building a saw, and then will post it all.

Regards from Perth

Derek

  Never discount older Craftsman tools
Posted by: enjuneer - 08-29-2015, 08:45 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (5)

Any idea of the vintage of this drill?

I just bought an approx 1938 Langdon 74C miter box and 5 x 28 saw both labeled Craftsman - lightly used condition. Sorry no pics my brother picked it up for me and I'm waiting for shipment.
