For safety, arbor nuts tighten opposite to the direction of rotation. This keeps the nut tight while you are using the saw and prevents the nut from unthreading and falling off during use.

If the nut was not adequately tightened before the saw was turned on, the starting torque can jam the nut ridiculously tight.

Anyway, jam some wood into the teeth of the blade to hold it in position and put a big extension bar on your wrench to get more torque. You can also try putting force on the nut AND whacking it with a hammer. Kinda like an impact wrench, the impact can often free stuck stuff. A little penetrating oil may also help.

Metal Vice - can this be replaced?
Posted by: DogwoodTales - 10-04-2015, 08:49 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (1)

Looks like the harborfreight vice. Had one just like it and it broke the nut too as well as generally sloppy. Check harborfreight for a current model and see if there is a parts breakdown in their instructions then see if they van get it.

It sounds very much like your pressure tank is "air locked" (water logged). The diaphragm has failed, which doesn't leave enough room for air in the tank. So the small volume of air in there causes the cycling you see. I've been told there is no repair to these tanks...replacement is the only solution.

How many openings do you get for your $20?

Quick glance at the install PDF (which means I didn't read the whole thing) and it looks like you could do the same thing with Masonite or MDF.

It's great to get personal instruction from very knowledgeable folks. I do understand how a tight mouth can aid in tearout, but I've never equated that to thickness of the shavings.
