  Leigh jig comparisons
Posted by: mbw - 10-19-2015, 07:33 AM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (2)

There are a few differences but for your purposes I think the super jigs will be fine. I put a link below to Leigh site which compares all their jigs.

https://www.leighjigs.com/download/Compa...hart-1.pdf

I think the main advantages the D4R has are quality of materials, board thickness, and some angled joints. But the Super jig out of the box can do single pass HB dovetails. The D4R is capable of doing that but you either need to modify the fingers or buy new ones all together. I've never tried but maybe you can get a discount if you order from Leigh directly and asked for the jig to be shipped with the modified fingers.

Beginning a workbench - Input greatly appreciated
Posted by: dspeer - 10-18-2015, 11:09 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (12)

[Image: good1_zps6h5tij39.jpg.html?filters%5Buser%5D...=1&o=2]

I am at the beginning of an adventure - I am going to build my own workbench. So far, I have 31 oak boards that used to be church pews, ripped and planed to either 3/4 or 1 1/4 inches. Beautiful lumber that I got for a pittance.
Boards are 3 1/2 inches wide.
I don't want to mess this up, so I respectfully ask you woodworking pro's for your input:
I a certainly not going to glue 31 boards at the same time. Also - of course boards are not 100% even - when put on top of each other, some stick out in the middle, some at the edges. I am not good with hand planes, this bench is supposed to change that. I am aware of flattening techniques using a router.

How would you proceed? I have about 32 inches total width. Should I glue 4 8 inch sections, flatten them individually, then glue the 4 sections? Or glue up one 5 inch section and then add piece by piece to that until the full width is reached?

Should I force the ones that stick out by clamping vertically while glueing? Should I straighten one edge before clamping?

I would really appreciate your input.

Thanks!

Dietrich

can shorten ball point springs in a second with a snips. I'm not sure that's the size you need, but they may work. I have an 8" delta jointer that had springs under the knives, I took them out as I think its easier to set them without the springs.

  Turning bottle stoppers question
Posted by: Gregory of Sherwood Forest - 10-18-2015, 08:26 PM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (2)

Greg

That is how I do it. Most of the time I drill the hole 1/8 less and just turn the top and when done I manually thread the stopper into it making its own threads which I think is much better and easier too. What kinds of wood do you have?

On punky woods I soak it in CA glue or I should say put CA on it until it will not take anymore.

Seeking Rough QSWO or Walnut in Syracuse NY Area... Where to go?

Lakeshore hardwoods is worth the trip - even if you don't buy anything. Very nice place and some good choices. I would say their pricing is competitive for a retail environment. If you will be within 30 minutes of it then at least go and see what you think.
