  Mallet preference
Posted by: mbw - 10-26-2015, 06:21 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (6)

I vastly prefer a "carvers style mallet"

I tend to use one of the green head polyurethane mallets. I have two of those; 20oz and 12oz for different sized dovetails.

I also have a 5 lb stainless steel carvers mallet that I wrapped in leather and I will use that from time to time.

I like a heavier mallet as I can take lighter taps and get more control without a big swing.

What Battery for my 12 V winch

I use a deep cycle battery for my boat and use a Battery Tender Jr. To keep it charged between uses. The current battery is 8 years old.

There are a few different systems that I know of. They differ in the connections. I am aware of 2 styles of crimp rings, a system where the pipe expands and then shrinks back over the connector, and the shark bites some here love. There is a difference in cost between them, and availability of parts/tools.

I would check to see what your planned place of purchase usesor recommends and then work from that. It wouldn't be much fun to have a system that is hard to get parts for.

I have a couple but it took a lot longer to get them, left handed. They do cut smooth.

  4' LED garage lights
Posted by: Bope - 10-25-2015, 06:44 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (7)

I've converted fixtures from T8 to LED. It really is easy. It was earlier this year so I don't have any long term data on it.

We will be doing it again with some T-12 stuff in the basement.

Stanley # 60 Miter box, looking for manual

I was just looking around, and came across this Flea Bay offering Is it just me, or do you scratch your head some when they say, "New: A brand-new, unused, unopened , undamaged item" and then right there have pictures of it all spread out where it was obviously out of the box.

This one has the saw I have though, and looks very much like my new find. I will admit that I opened the box to peek, and so had someone before me who owned it.

This is for BloomingtonMike or others with a CNC tools

Thanks buddy for thinking of me. Those might work for little machines.

On teh CNC router I uses a 2.2 kw 3ph water cooled ER20 spindle and 2.2kw VFD. On teh 1050 CNC knee mill I have a VFD controlling the big 3hp keg sized 3ph motor. I also have it setup with external DC braking.

I have full speed setting and direction control of both via GCode sent to the controllers. I use modbus on the router using rs232 to rs485 comm betwen mach/computer and the VFD. The knee mill gets PWM sent to the VFD via the Centroid controller.

Motion on the router is via nema23 steppers. I use a Gecko G540 stepper controller (I use two G540s actually).

The knee mill uses encoded nema42 DC servos and like stated earlier a Centroid controller.
