I have never turned it before, but what I have seen from others is pretty nice.
Anything from 9 to 18 inches in length is good to use so it can be split and a bowl made to what ever size the thickness is.

Unless you are doing some serious grinding, as in fabrication and not sharpening, 1/2 hp is plenty; I've never had any luck with the lights, they fall off and don't put much light on the action anyway, I prefer a secondary light myself.

In the Fall/Winter edition of American Bungalow, pp. 120-121. Tenons, splines, chamfers, dovetails, several kinds of stretchers, and keyed and through tenons. Lots of other photos of interest to those of us who prize this style of furniture.
