  Replacing wood balustrades with metal
Posted by: EightFingers - 08-10-2023, 01:51 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (2)

Has anyone done this? I have 156 of them to do and I wonder if it would weaken the handrails making them wobbly.I plan on using the kit with the top and bottom plus the post.
I will keep the newel and intermediate posts, but those and the top handrail will be refinished.

PSA - Nova accessory pricing favorable in Canada
Posted by: MKepke - 08-08-2023, 12:35 PM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (4)

Just a heads up..if you have some way of getting goods cheaply from Canada to the US, some Nova accessories seem to be about 50% of the US price (after exchange rates).

I just got a Nova triple bearing live center kit.. $65 Canuck bucks or ~$50 US Nearly $100 US if bought domestically www.amazon.com/NOVA-5015-Center-System-Stepped/dp/B0064JIZGC/ref=asc_df_B0064JIZGC/

Also a SuperNova2 (sku 23055, not Pro-Tek or LITE) with free insert for $128 Canuck bucks or about $95 US. Near $200 US if bought domestically

Lastly, I bought a set of 5” jaws at a similar discount.

YMMV

  Saw Stop Outfeed Table
Posted by: Johnny Currado - 08-08-2023, 08:09 AM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (6)

I recently upgraded my table saw from a powermatic 3hp to a new sawstop cabinet saw.  I also purchased the sawstop brand folding outfeed table.  I was curious if anyone else has purchased this accessory and how do you like it?  Any issues with it outside of the assembly?  Or are there better alternatives for a good outfeed table on my new sawstop cabinet saw?

Thanks in advance!

  What's in that there box?
Posted by: bandit571 - 08-06-2023, 08:31 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (15)

Well...all the toys that were on the top of the bench?

Have mostly been put away..I even cleaned out the tool well!

More on that handsaw, later...after it goes through rehab....

So..what IS in this box? 5 cent tour?

The corner is a tad "busy", but everything is within reach, while I am working at the bench...also, more of a "Ready Use" rack...

Open the left hand door...start at the top of that door..

That be an 18" Panel saw...a few coping saws, and a few other toys..Near the bottom of the left door..

Rack is almost full...and a couple block planes...turn to the right just a bit..

Then look up...

Then open and brace the right hand door open...

And look up a bit...

As for the rest of the right hand door..

And that about does it....the Plane Til can be another tour, if anyone wants....

Thanks for looking in!

Tools for sale NJ (added router table)
Posted by: measurecutcurse - 08-05-2023, 07:29 PM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - Replies (7)

Hi All,

I'm thinning out my shop tools. I can't effectively post picture here, but will happily text or email pictures if you PM me a good cell or email.

1) 18/36" Delta mode 31-250 wide belt sander. Asking $275. Runs great. I'm not sure how old this model is as I purchased it used about 10 years ago. It comes with a mobile stand, a new platform belt paper, and a number of rolls of assorted grit sandpaper.  SOLD

2) Delta 50-150 1.5HP 1200 CFM vertical bag dust collector 115V 1phase. $350 Purchased new. This thing sucks, literally, it sucks great. Comes with top cloth bag, 2 new 6mil bottom bags and a variety of hoses including a 20 foot 4" diameter and 8' 4" diameter hose, as well as a variety of other hoses, fittings and couplings. The hoses and fittings would likely cost you $200 new.

3) Porter Cable oil free pancake compressor $50. Includes 20' 1/4" hose. Runs perfectly. Great for using a nail gun or finish nailer. Also handy for all smaller compressed air needs around the house like blowing up exercise balls your wife won't ever use, putting air in the tires when the kids don't understand what the yellow low air pressure warning light comes on, and inflating the 20 soccer balls l5 minutes before leaving for practice after you get volunteered to coach a game you never played and don't know the first thing about.

4) Benchdog router table Comes with split fence with excellent dust collection port and 2"-4" fitting to hook up to the dust collector shown above... Also comes with mobile base.

2-4 are still available.

  Teak Chair Plans
Posted by: Mike 55 - 08-05-2023, 07:04 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (1)

Hi,

I was looking at buying some teak chairs for my lanai as I have a teak table that I purchases 4 years ago. After seeing the price of $549 each I thought I might try to see if I can build them. All my searches show where to buy. I even checked Norm's site as I knew he built some chairs. Has anyone built anything like this? They look simple enough but I'm I always like plans with a material list. The next issue will be to find a supplier.

  Maple top issue
Posted by: iublue - 08-04-2023, 07:55 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (8)

My brother brought down two maple work bench tops and wanted me to refinish them.
I took them to a local wood supplier and had them run them through their wide belt sander.  SO much easier than trying to do it by hand AND it flattens them out!
It looks like there might have been a vise mounted at one time and it appears oil has seep into the wood.

Do I need to seal that some how?  If yes, what should I use?

I plan on spraying General Finishes Enduro as a top coat.

Thanks,

Toney

  WoodSmith magazine, issue 39
Posted by: redband02 - 08-04-2023, 10:54 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (10)

I can't seem to find issue 49 of WoodSmith magazine from June 1985

this issue describes a " Old Fashioned Porch Swing-Glider"

I made a number of these for siblings and in-laws  in the late 80s

My oldest son, in his new house, remembers the porch swing fondly and wants one for himself

So I any one would be so kind to PM me if you have a copy, I would appreciate a photo copy of the plan.

Thank you very much

Tom

For Sale: Disston 3D Saw Vice SOLD
Posted by: Admiral - 08-02-2023, 05:26 PM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - Replies (1)

Continuing to thin the herd a bit of my users, in this case, former user, which I've not really used much lately. First, I don’t have paypal or any other EFT gizmos, so payment in US Postal money order please, if I know you from the forum checks are ok; first Private Message with an unequivocal “I’ll take it” gets priority in line and I’ll respond to every PM promptly. Please put your name and shipping address in the PM so I can print shipping labels, this avoids a lot of back and forth. Many pics in this link to a Flickr album:

SOLD  This is a Disston 3D saw vice.  A beast, some say the best saw vice Disston ever made.  They are not rare, but not common either, people tend to keep them.  These are often found with cracks and repairs.  This one is solid as the day it was made.  One apology, the "cup" on the end of the screw clamp disintegrated and fell off, so I fabricated a piece of steel with countersinks to use as a replacement, and it actually has more surface area than the cup ever did and secures the vice to your surface.  Other than that, no apologies (and it might be an improvement!)  I have a closeup pic of the steel clamped to some cherry scrap to show you how it works.

Anyway, this is one heavy saw vice, shipping weight would be about 12.5 pounds, but if disassembled it can fit in a large USPS flat rate box; only two bolts, one wingnut that secures the base to the frame, and one bolt that holds the wings to the frame.  So pretty easy to reassemble.  I've seen pricing all over the place on these, but I'm happy with $55 plus shipping.  Large Flat Rate box is $22.80, so shipped it would be $77.80 at most; I'll figure shipping with your zip and if less (basically if you're on the east coast as I'm shipping from NJ) I'll let you know.

Again, this is not the standard Disston #1 or #2 saw vice, this one is substantial and generally viewed as its best product.  Thanks for looking.
