My Unisaw replace part, sorta (need brain trust input)
Posted by: Aram - 11-06-2015, 10:30 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (9)

I would call them and share my concerns with them to see if something slipped through or they confirm it will work. I would try to avoid the 15% fee if the product is not as described or serviceable as your CC will help with that if need be. There is a local company that makes fiberglass goose egg covers along with motor doors they used real parts to create the molds as opposed to getting close to what was there

  bonding wood with linear friction

Interesting.
I've always been fascinated by this sort of "frontier" research. It's difficult to say where a technique of this type will be useful, but I'm not one to say, "Don't try. Don't find out." I don't see this sort of thing playing a role in the rather ordinary type of woodwork that most forum members engage in though. Constructing cabinets and furniture is unlikely to transition into this method anytime soon, even from some of the bigger manufacturers. I don't think I would be comfortable walking on a floor I knew was held up by beams of that type. It is good to keep in mind though that floors are now being held up by what amounts to OSB beams, and nobody would think twice about walking on one.
We shall see where this one goes.

  Good for a beginner lathe?
Posted by: greatscott - 11-06-2015, 03:00 PM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (13)

I've been thinking about getting into turning to do some pens/plane knobs and smaller bowls and came across this lathe:

Delta wood lathe 46-700 with turning tools $400

While the lathe doesn't stand out I noticed that there was a set of 8 Sorby tools that came with it. Is this a good deal for the lathe/tools for $400? My original idea/goal was to get a smaller mini/midi lathe that I could secure to my work station when I wanted to use it and store it away when not in use. I really hadn't considered a bigger lathe as I didn't want to invest in a big tool if I didn't end up using it enough.

Should I move on from this lathe or is this something I should consider? I've never posted before in the woodturning section so pardon any ignorance I have towards turning. Thanks for any feedback you can provide!

Laminating an outfeed table and table saw extension wing
Posted by: greatscott - 11-06-2015, 11:53 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (11)

I've always laminated both sides when I've built shop tables and wings. I prefer to use HD particle board verses MDF for a substrate as this is what commercial countertop businesses use. PB seems to resist swelling a bit more. its cheaper and lighter too.
