Natural edge bowls: What's your process?
Posted by: jerickson - 12-25-2015, 04:29 PM - Forum: Woodturning - Replies (5)

I have not tried natural-edge bowls yet. After a private lesson from one of the professional turners in our local turning club, I became a believer in air-powered disc sanders.

My favorite is the Grex 105* Random Orbital Sander.

I use it with foam sanding pads and Abranet disks.

This has really improved my sanding both on and off the lathe.

A couple of drops of appropriate oil add to the air tool before each use avoids have to add an oiler to the air hose.

A word of caution, though, sanding a punky wood bowl on the lathe either by hand or with an air-sander while the lathe is turning makes it way too easy to reduce the wall thickness in the punky areas.

Stationary belt sander vs disc sander?
Posted by: jgourlay - 12-25-2015, 04:21 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (36)

In general what are the strengths and weaknesses of stationary belt sanders vs stationary disk sanders?

I have been making boxes with dovetail keys. I am using chisels to flushtrim the keys, but am thinking I want a power method. Which do you think is better for this? Who makes a good tabletop version?

Where can I buy a dial caliper

with longer legs.

I have been turning bigger spindle stuff lately and the little legs that come on normal ones are to short and I do not want to use some outside calipers.

Anyone have an idea where to buy a one with 4" or better legs?

Thanks

Arlin

I look forward to seeing what you made.

Tom

I love mantels. Was it hard to hang? What did you do to hang it with?

I wish I had some of my Grandfathers saws when he made the house and barn way back in 1894 just outside of Benson Minnesota. Later he put lumber siding on the barn but do not remember when.

Hmmm, I have been using that set extensively of late... I do not think the teeth will interlock properly if two sets are stacked together, but I might be wrong.

Don't have an answer for you, but I had the 8" straight knife version and about 4 years ago changed the head to spiral head and never looked back, love it.
