Suggestion on how to make this? (Hands holding a cross)
Posted by: themoon - 03-20-2024, 11:28 AM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (9)

My in-law parents are celebrating their 50th anniversary and was asked if there was a way to make this out of wood.

My first thought was to just bandsaw it out but I'm not sure how to connect the hands to the cross without it looking weird.
Then I thought maybe I could create an inlay pattern in a block of wood but that sounds nightmarish and I wouldn't know how to begin.

Any thoughts?

  Liberty Bell Chipbreaker screw
Posted by: EricU - 03-19-2024, 01:47 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (3)

Seems like they come up on ebay occasionally, probably because people part out the planes after they break the adjuster.  Somehow the adjuster on my 135 is fine, but the screw is missing.

A regular stanley chipbreaker screw is bigger, and that's the way I might end up going.  But does anyone know what the thread on the original screw was? I swear I saw it the other day, but can't find it again.

Offset venting for replacement kitchen fan?
Posted by: MKepke - 03-19-2024, 08:52 AM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (10)

Anyone run into the situation where they needed to offset in-the-wall ductwork?

My particular problem is that I need to exhaust a kitchen range hood down a stud cavity. The centerline of the stud cavity and the centerline of the hood don't line up.

I haven't bought the hood yet, but all the ones I'm seeing have the rear exhaust opening centered and fixed/immovable. f I install a common e.g. Broan range hood per the installation instructions, the ~10" rear vent opening on the hood will have 2-3" of the rear vent blocked by a stud(s) and the damper will be blocked closed.

Seems like my options are to find some make/model of range hood that allows offset rear-venting, or MacGyver cutting sheet metal and adding a plate to the range hood to shift the vent opening on the hood (not crazy about butchering a $300 hood leaving me with no warranty).

Other strategies?

  Kitchen Wall Cabinet Over Tile?
Posted by: David Stone - 03-19-2024, 06:34 AM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (5)

I want to add two wall cabinets to a section of wall that is tiled. Can I put the cabinets over the tile? Or do I need to remove the tile first? If I go over the tile, what’s the best way to drill the holes so the tiles don’t shatter?

  Stain or Paint?
Posted by: fptahoe - 03-18-2024, 09:07 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (2)

I am making a make-up tale for my daughter. She wants it black (like some Asian furniture).  I have had good luck with other pieces I have stained black with GF's stain.  I will use either GF High Performance or Arm-R-seal as topcoat.  While I may have to do brush-only applications, I have a sprayer and with temps heading to the 60's at least, I should be able to get out and spray on a sunny, calm day.  Am now having second thoughts on staining and wondering if I should just paint the thing black (instead of stain), and put HP over it and be done.  I am going back and forth on which to use in terms of final appearance, durability, etc.  Any comments would be welcome.  Thanks as always...

  Small Boxes
Posted by: TheCabinetmaker - 03-17-2024, 05:29 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (5)

I made the Cherry box a week ago to store some detail chisels, from Lee Valley. The 2 Walnut boxes 5 or so years ago. The walnut ones are the same size LxW but with different heights. They all have small runners on the bottom to interlock with same-size boxes. They were mostly made with hand tools (dovetails, cutting the groves, and beveling the top). They were finished with BLO and Minwax Antique oil.

  Walnut or Elm?
Posted by: lincmercguy - 03-17-2024, 02:40 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (5)

I thought this is an elm tree, I didn't pay too much attention to the leaves last year and I didn't think there were walnut trees here. But this seems awfully dark for elm.

  Handsaw for Smaller Splits
Posted by: titanxt - 03-17-2024, 01:37 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (3)

Hello!

I have a bit of an unconventional saw question, considering this is for burning wood and not making something out of it. But, there is a lot or great hand tool knowledge here. I am wanting to cut smaller splits (2" - 3" in diameter) from 12" - 14" long to around 8" for an offset smoker. Any suggestions on what will work well and allow me to hold the split on a stump while cutting?  Thank you!
