Question A spoke shave next? Why? Which one?
Posted by: ®smpr_fi_mac® - 01-08-2024, 07:38 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (21)

I think I want a spoke shave next.

Current inventory:

#5 scrub
#5 jack
#7 jointer
#4 wooden smoother
#92 shoulder
Veritas medium router

Now I build almost exclusively tables since I started a small business on the side...I'm currently building three with more coming.

I use my router on almost all projects, mainly to tune tenons.   My shoulder also gets lots of use.  My #7 is a wall decoration.  My smoother is bored.  My #5's get occasional use as needed.

I'm primarily a power tool user but love pretending to be a Neanderthal every now and then.

So, building mostly straight stuff...will a spoke shave maybe be useful?  If so, why?  Which one?

What say you?

  Drop down outlets

Am I losing my mind or do I remember a time when you could find an outlet that would hang from the ceiling?  Maybe I'm thinking of an air line and not electric?
Confused

Question Varathane color chart by wood?
Posted by: ®smpr_fi_mac® - 01-05-2024, 10:58 AM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (3)

Folks, I'm hunting for a color/sample chart for Varathane's oil stains, specifically for white oak.  My google searching is coming up with nothing useful.  Do any of y'all know of one?

  Woodpeckers Dowel Press: SOLD
Posted by: Philip1231 - 01-04-2024, 03:14 PM - Forum: Tool Swap N' Sell - Replies (2)

SOLD:This was one of their "One-Time" tools that was issued in 2016 and has not been available since. It has seen very light use and has a few light scratches/dings from sitting in the shop but it is in overall excellent condition and comes with the imperial die set. This is a massive machine (over 10 pounds not including the die set) and works quite well. SOLD

  Should I buy this?

That was the question one of the guys in my woodworking club wanted to know and he texted me some pics of a plane that he found as part of a group of tools for a total of $15. Hopefully, the pics will be here soon.

I've sold my shop (or almost everything) and getting ready to move. I have to downsize from a roll top desk to my secretary and found a FWW archive 1975 - 2015 which I have no more use. Anyone wanting it, let me know. I'll even spring for the postage.

Happy new year long lost friends!

  Stair Railing
Posted by: crokett™ - 01-03-2024, 04:56 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (15)

My wife's christmas present was replacing the builder grade stair mismatched stair railings with something custom.  The railings and newel post are walnut.  The balusters are poplar.   Hopefully the links work.  It is not easy to share photos here.  With the file size limits if I download them and try to put them in as attachments I have to resize them all to fit under the size limits.    I used my 3D printer as part of this project.  Mostly because I could I modeled and printed angle gauges to make sure I got all the angles correct.  I built the assembly with the newel post and balusters before I installed it.

  Cordless Nailer Recommendations?
Posted by: ajkoontz - 01-03-2024, 03:55 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (13)

I have a trim project coming up that I want to use as an excuse to upgrade my pneumatic trim nailer. I have a decent pneumatic nailer, but I hate lugging my air compressor to the work area. My AC is a tweener, too small to do much but too big to lug around. I've done a little research and decided DeWalt or Milwaukee are the brands I'm looking at to go cordless. The options I'm considering are:

Milwaukee M18 15ga finish nailer- $329 w/out battery/ $399 w/ battery. I don't own any M18 batteries so I'll either have to buy with battery or buy a DeWalt or Makita to Milwaukee battery adapter
DeWalt 16 ga finish nailer- $295
Bauer cordless air compressor w/ 2 3aH batteries- $250 w/ current pneumatic nailer. I could use current Bauer batteries I have, but at some point will want to buy 2 dedicated batteries if I buy this compressor.

The air compressor is appealing to me as I would have a small portable AC for airing up tires and odd jobs away from a convenient power source. Also, $250 is closer to the budget I wanted to spend, but I'd rather buy once, cry once to buy something I won't regret so if the Milwaukee is a clear winner I don't mind going that route. Looking for any opinions or recommendations.
