Laguna vs Dark Stone bs blades - open box observations - DogwoodTales - 08-08-2025
I have one of each on hand now. Both 3/4' carbide tipped bandsaw blades.
Here are my first/open box and observations.
The Laguna resaw king arrived yesterday and it was what I was expecting. A carbide tipped band saw blade. At first I didn't think anything more of it. Then the Dark Stone arrived today and I had something to compare.
The first thing I noticed when I opened the Dark Stone box was the presence of 2-3 silicone packets. The Laguna blade did not have those.
Next I noticed that the Dark Stone has a type of grayish bluing applied to the blade. IDK if that's what it is, but that's what it seems like. The Laguna appears to just have oil on the blade.
I uncoiled the Dark Stone then I uncoiled the Laguna. The Laguna was noticeably lighter and more flexible. Not by like 50-100% more, but noticeable without expecting it.
I measured the teeth and the blade with a machinist caliper.
The Laguna's teeth are about 47/1000s wide and the blade body is about 27/1000s thick.
The Dark Stone teeth are about 62/1000s wide and the blade body is about 35/1000s thick.
The weld - I ran my thumb along the spine behind the weld on each. They are both are pretty smooth to the touch, but the Dark Stone is slightly more noticeable to the touch than on the Laguna.
That's all I have for now. It's going to be a fat minute before I set one up on my 14" Rikon bandsaw. When I do I'll try out both and post results.
I'm placing my bets that they will both have satisfactory results, but that the Laguna will have better results.
I'm thinking that tension differences will be a toss up.
It seems to me that the Laguna will need good tension to keep that thinner blade true, but then the Dark Stone will need more tension to overcome the extra thickness. We'll see. I'm far from claiming proficiency at this stuff so lmk what you know/expect.
