My Sharpening Bench - bandit571 - 07-31-2025

Nothing fancy...
[attachment=55374]
What you see, is what I got...

On the Kitchen Counter top...right next to the Kitchen Sink...
I start with 2 clean rags..one to keep the counter clean...the other to keep the irons clean...
Seems a few planes were in need of a decent sharpening...so..
First up...
[attachment=55375]
A 280 grit water stone..working on both the bevel and the back...twice..clean off after each...helps to keep a water bottle handy, too..
[attachment=55376]
Rub the stone with the flattening stone..couple of spritz and away you go...
[attachment=55377]
Next up?
[attachment=55378]
1000 grit...was showing a lot of striations from the edge of the bevel...left behind by the 280?   work both bevel & back,,,clean things off..
Next..
[attachment=55379]
1500 grit stone...again working both faces, twice...Last pass was on the back..
[attachment=55380]

And then, finally...
[attachment=55381]
Finish up with the 6000 grit....

I also made sure that the chipbreaker sit gap free...and is set back about 1mm once the two items are bolted back together...
Install back into the Stanley No. 6c, Type 17..and take it for a test drive on some Soft Maple..
Bring the plane and the shaving back upstairs ( where the tripod mounted camera was)
[attachment=55382]
Calipers said the shaving was around 0.002" thick?
[attachment=55383]
Should be good enough for a Small Jointer Plane...

YMMV, of course...but this is what I use...
Have had to use a grinder on a few irons...mainly a 3 minute trip to flatten the back...I use a free-hand approach, no guides needed..just a pair of old hands.

Just another Sharpening Thread?  We'll see...

Nice. Sharpening is my Achilles heel right now.

Well..I could use this for quick touch ups..
[attachment=55386]
Along with the Green Stick Crayon....but, I'd have to clear this end of the bench..polish to edge and back..and then put the Grinder away...

Never got a good edge from the narrow sanding belt machine....although, mine being vertical....makes things a bit ..rough to do...

Usually, I do this sort of sharpening in-between projects...getting things sharpened and cleaned up, and ready to go again...I am rarely in any sort of hurry...
4 stone approach usually last less than 30 minutes, counting clean up and a test drive..

Rare times a plane iron comes in so "bowed up" that I do need a grinder..
[attachment=55389]
I can use the side of a Fine Grinding wheel to get things flat....then the 6" sanding disc to polish this up...as I have a Beltsander/disc sander machine..with a very worn 6" pad....that I really should switch out for a new one...someday...

Usually, the stones are all I need to use,,
[attachment=55387]
As long as the shavings come off the plane like this..
[attachment=55388]
Works for me...

You can get a hair-popping edge with that buffer...if you understand how to use it correctly..but that holds true for most processes..and it is definitely easier with a belt if it is horizontal and running at half speed....I made the one shown but I also have a belt driven factory built sharpener, 1/2 speed and horizontal which I plan to sell before too long..at my age and health, there's no point to keep hanging on to so many duplicate tools and machinery.
........then too, there's a certain "Zen" you can get from sharpening on stones by hand...a feeling of accomplishment that sharpening with machines doesn't provide for everyone...I like all means of sharpening...I'm still chasing that "one-atom" edge.

I like your photography and the care you put into it..

What grit stone is that Pops

RE: My Sharpening Bench - stav - 08-08-2025

I encountered a fellow at Webster flea market that had a machine like that. He charged $5 to sharpen a pocket knife.  While he worked, he would change out the belts depending on the need of the blade at the time. All the way down to a strop.  My knife came out great and it didn't take but maybe 10 mins even with the belt changes.

Not real sure but looks like about a 120 grit, son..Used for making woodcarving knife blades...I use finer belts for sharpening followed by a leather stropping belt...It takes about ten seconds to change them.
