4H Project 2025 - ajkoontz - 07-18-2025

Gotta brag on my son and his last 4H project ever. He's a 10-year 4H'er and this year he got Grand Champion and State Fair Entry. Really happy I got to spend some time out in the shop helping him build this. Great memories and I don't spend as much time as I used to building things these days so it was bonus to spend time with my son AND get to engage in some WW-ing. This was based on Norm Abrams' Secretary Desk project, and it's double bonus that my son has become as big a Norm fan as I am. The only reason we changed anything is to make a few of the operations a little more approachable for my son, and Norm used pine. We used walnut because his grandpa milled this up from a tree he cut down at someone's house. Who doesn't love free walnut from Grandpa, right?

Great job! Nice to see young folks still interested in woodworking. It looks like you taught him well.

Congratulations to your son.  Don't see that kind of excellent woodwork at the fairs down here.

What's the plan for the secretary now?

#1- Build the drawers for the hutch that we didn't get to due to deadline time constraints
#2- Find some better looking knobs for the loafer pulls (can't see them in the photos, but they're pretty hideous. Best we could do on short timeframe)
#3- He built this for his room, so he's keeping it to use as desk/ storage.

Very nice work, even nicer that you got to spend some time with him.

Congratulations young man, that's a great looking desk.

First I have to say Congrats on time spent together and doing a woodworking project like that to boot.  Most kids nowadays just do not have the time to spend with parents.  Second the secretary desk looks great make sure you guys put names and date on the desk for memories sake.

Now go and find more time to build another project.

I'll bet he's rightly proud of that, and you are rightly proud of him.
