router bit - oakey - 07-16-2025

anyone know of a rabbeting bit that has bearings allowing it to cut to 1 inch depth i can find 3/4 but need 1 inch for a project has to be a guided bit to do a rebate inside of a frame
the rebate only has to be 1/4-inch-wide slot cutter bit maybe work not sure ????
but a regular rabbet bit would probably be better

There may be some differences between brands, but my slot cutter (Freud) wouldn't cut that deep. To cut a rabbet that deep would take a whopper of a bit, I'd bet it would be too large to handle safely in a hand held router. Depending on how the frame is made and it's width, you might be able to go around the outside using a router fence and a straight bit to cut the rabbet. That would be tricky and may take some work to sit it up. That same method would be easier (I think) on a router table guiding the frame on the table's fence, and both methods might be a 2 pass process.

thanks Fred
if i could simply run the frame ahead of time on my shaper it would be simple but then the rebate would show on the end of the frames and weaken the joints
joints are dowels and glue and one Kreg screw
the frames are for shutters 47 inches by 14 inches, and they hold lattice work 1/4 inch thick i just want the lattice to have lots of glue area so hence the large rebate area might have to change my design a bit i have found a bit that does 3/4 by using the smallest bearing
router table for sure or a few passes with handheld router i have couple router tables and a few handheld routers so lots of options at my disposal

I'd think about cutting the rabbets in the finished frames by cutting from the top - not edge - using a top bearing guided mortising bit.

Make a rectangular jig/frame to guide the bearing. Jig sits on the frame, router rides on the jig. If you add tabs to the jig, it'll quickly index onto your frame(s).

PS. I don't see a router table being a viable option if this is in fact a rabbet for the "inside of a frame". You'd be cutting with the work piece trapped between the bit and the fence. That would get..exciting.

That bit would be at least 2-3/8" wide and I've never seen on for a router.  Best bet might be a straight edge and a straight bit with multiple passes.

If I am visualizing this correctly, have you considered cutting the frames a little narrow, doing through-cuts for the slots on the table saw, and then gluing thin strips on to cover two sides?
