22” drawer on a 21” Blum drawer slide? - DogwoodTales - 07-13-2025

My original kitchen plans were to build 22” deep drawers, but Blum under mount slides jump in size from 21 to 24”. There won’t be room for a 24” deep drawer so I ordered the 21” and just planned to make 21” deep drawers.
However as I was looking over the 21” drawer slides that were delivered and I thought that maybe I could still make 22” deep drawers by just setting the locking clip back by 1” with a spacer and of course the drawer slide would have to be set 1” deeper into the cabinet as well. That means that the last 1” won’t extend outside the cabinet frame, but I don’t see that as an issue and I’ll have an extra inch of depth to use.
But I’ve never installed these slide types before so I’m not sure if there’s an issue with this idea that I’m overlooking.
Would this work?
Thanks

I don't see why not as when you unlock them the drawers can slide forward.  Suggest making up a drawer box out of scrap lumber the same thickness as the final lumber thickness as the drawers are sized from the insides of the box.   To locate the drilled hole in the drawer back just push the drawer to the back and the pin on the slide will mark were to drill.
The side clearance will be less than side slides normally are.   You will like them once you get all set up.  The front locks just get pushed up in the corner  of the sides and front of drawer to locate screws.      Strongly suggest the scrap lumber box for the first one of a undermount.  Roly

I've never done that with under mount slides, but I suspect it will work. I have done it with side mounts and that's a piece of cake.

Isn’t the just the inside of the box the side to side measurement but the length is still, in this case with 21@ slides, normally 21”?

Yes,  What I was getting at don't measure the opening width and subtract one inch like side mounts as the drawers will need to be a little wider as they have  less clearance on the sides which depends on side thickness.  Blum has good drawings on line.    Roly

Okay. Yes I’ve seen those instructions and videos. Thanks

I have never used those slides so maybe I am missing something.  It seems to me that instead of setting the slide back one inch from the front you would just let one inch of the drawer hang back from the rear end of the slide. You still would get one inch less than ideal to fully open, but the slide installation would be more in line with the manufacturer’s intend method.

There is a pin that goes in the drawer back that is both a stop and allows up and down adjustment.   The stop allows the front locks to latch.  Roly

Unlike a side mount drawer slide, the under mount slides limit the depth of the drawer with a positive stop. So a 21” drawer slide stops at 21” from the front of the drawer.
My idea is to cheat the system a little by making a 22” deep drawer fit a 21” under mount slide by setting the slide back deeper into the cabinet by 1”.
I also haven’t installed this type of slide before so wasn’t sure if there will be an issue with this idea.
I’ll give it a whirl when I get to that point and share the results in this forum.

I don't know what series of Blum slides you are using but with the ones I have been using, you screw the slide into the face frame, 3mm back from the face.
If you are using the same ones, I guess you could put solid pieces along the side and then move it back and just screw into those new pieces.

Also, the ones I am using are full extension.  Moving back an inch would negate the full extension part.

Sounds like a lot of work for gaining one inch.
