Erupting dragon egg - mtrainer90 - 07-08-2025 Making a Dragon egg from some Cherry burl wood and Alumilite Clear Slow resin. The egg is finished with Waterlox Gloss. The bubbles erupting out of the burl were not what I had intended with this piece but gave a really cool effect in the end. RE: Erupting dragon egg - Arlin Eastman - 07-08-2025 The name fits perfectly. RE: Erupting dragon egg - Cabinet Monkey - 07-10-2025 Looks awesome. Do you think you could have eliminated/ reduced the bubbles by pulling a vacuum on the burl before the pour ? What about if you’d pulled one after an initial pour ,say 1/4 , vacuum , then add the rest of the mix , then final vacuum ? I used a fairly quick setting resin since I was trying to get rid of it. I dont know that it has enough open time to go in and out of a vacuum and then into a pressure pot before getting too hard to where either system would be effective. I think the best bet if using a fast curing resin would have been to paint a very thin layer of resin on the burl to seal it. All though like how it turned out and think its super cool, it wasn't really the look I was going for so I am going to be using deep pour on the next one which gives more than enough time for it to get into all the little cracks and voids and allow the air to escape and not cure in to it. You could have used stabilizing resin in a vacuum chamber first, then put it in a pressure pot with the quick setting resin. But I think the bubbles make it look cool! RE: Erupting dragon egg - Cabinet Monkey - 07-11-2025 I think it’s neat too. Not much experience with vacuum/ pressure pots , I was just curious where or how so much air came from the burl and wasn’t fully expunged. I guess I missed that you used fast cure epoxy, so that explains some of it. RE: Erupting dragon egg - Arlin Eastman - 07-11-2025 How do you buy your epoxy? Gallon, 5 Gallon, or 55 Gallon?? It really depends on the resin and how much I need for the project. A lot of the smaller things like this are left over from bigger projects. RE: Erupting dragon egg - Arlin Eastman - 07-12-2025 So you buy it by the gallon then. |
