Glass for Cabinet Doors - Woodchukker - 06-28-2025

I am making a media center with framed glass doors.  The glass size for the largest door will be 13"x52".  I will use tempered glass.  The door frames will be 2" wide by 7/8" thick cherry.  My question is what should be the thickness of the tempered glass?  I've done a fair amount of searching and it seems that 1/8" tempered glass is recommended for a glass cabinet door of this size  I'd just like to check this out with the experts here to make sure I don't need to go thicker.  I'd like to use 1/8" to keep the weight down but only if it is safe.

The glass pane will weigh about 8#, I sure think the frame you plan would be enough. For a door that long I would want at least 3 hinges, depending on type.

So 1/8" tempered glass is thick enough?  I agree on at least three hinges.

I certainly think it is, that weight was calculated using 1/8" thick glass.

Thank you!

Yes, 1/8" thick tempered glass will be plenty strong enough for that application.

If you can use a standard size piece of tempered glass that will work,  it is quite a bit cheaper than a custom size one as once it is tempered it cant be cut.  Roly

I was going to suggest laminated safety glass but I don't think it's thinner than 1/4"

I used a company in WA state, IIRC, maybe called One Day Glass, or something like that, for a couple of projects where I needed tempered glass in custom sizes.  Even though I live in NY, it was far cheaper to buy it from them than any local glass shop.

Yes, I just looked them up, these guys:  One Day Glass
