Yes, the good old days, but those posts put me on a buying spree of infills -  so my wallet is happier that those posts died off.

Wayne Anderson was a member here and his planes are works of art...Raney Nelson was also a member and made some fine examples as well....There was a couple others but I have forgotten their names..I have made a few small ones but not in the same league as ones I listed..I made the top and the middle one shown.

Infills are really beautiful (looking) planes. But, being only about 6-7 years into this game, all I know is vintage Stanley Bailey and a few Veritas (all metal-body) planes. What's the benefit, beyond beauty, of the infills? Curious minds want to know!

Their solidity and their weight (being both wood and metal) makes them less prone to chatter.  Also, while the metal planes may be more "adjustable" and have easily replaceable parts, that also means more things that can come loose (from the bolts holding the handles to the frog screws) or have threads get stripped, so both a pro and a con.

Not requiring as high-tech casting, they.predated the Bailey type(s) and were the high end planes of the day.  There is still an argument that can be made in their favor for that, though high end metal planes (Lie-Nielsen, Veritas) are quite well made these days.

Jack it's good to see you're still lurking here. I don't post a lot these days but every once and a while I like to let folks know I'm still here and kicking. This is an infill shooting plane I designed this past years. I've made a few of these with different metal/wood combination. This one features brass sides and resin infused Masur birch as the infill.

That is magnificent, Ron. Your metal work is always tops, and that Masur Birch is simply stunning.
