Got a little carried away. - RonB1957 - 06-05-2025

While working on a couple of saws for two guys I started a few more and got a little carried away on a 12" carcass saw. Plenty of time filing and sanding the spine. May wind up keeping this one. It's mahogany if my memory serves me correctly. I sometimes I get Sapele and Mahogany mixed up. 14  ppi X cut. Haven't even filed it yet.

Nice! How's the balance?

Actually not bad at all. The spine doesn't weigh much more than the normal solid brass spine. I don't really notice it, anyway. I will weigh it and compare when I sharpen the teeth as I will remove the spine to do so.

Thanks Pedder.  I did weigh the spine for comparison. There is a 2.5 ounce difference between my standard and this sculpted spine. Standard was 7.6 ounces and the sculpted was 10.1 ounces. Didn't cross my mind at the time, but I should have weighed one of my folded steel backs to compare as well. Tomorrow, perhaps. Either way I will likely keep it for myself. As if I need, yet another carcass saw.

With my limited experience, I don't really know much about the mechanics of back and forth hand sawing, but I imagine with your beautifully "sculpted" spine you could play with the distribution of the weight and the balance of the saw relative to where it is along the stroke, therefore ending up with not only a saw that looks darn good, but one that flows like nothing else.
