Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 05-28-2025 To get used to the House... [attachment=54723] Took a bit to haul these 1 x 6 and 1 x 8 planks into the house..Ash IS a bit heavy, after all... [attachment=54724] Most are 6' long..the bottom half? [attachment=54725] "Shorty" is a 1 x 8 x 37" plank... Lots of live edges... [attachment=54726] Including 3 from the same section of the log...Flat sawn. Project? Wait and see.... Cost? $26 total...plus I needed to cut a couple 12 footers down, to fit in the trunk of my Chevy Equinox LT.... RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - Arlin Eastman - 05-30-2025 good find and can not wait to see what you make RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - Patsfan - 05-30-2025 Okay, now that crossed the line into "gloat territory" about twenty eight pixels into pic one. LOOOOONG before the $26 price tag. ![]() Now you gotta show us what you do with it. ![]() RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 05-31-2025 Ok..first off, I really don't like to do Live Edge stuff..... Secondly, the planks are sitting there, same as every other stash, because the Chest Freezer's heat vent is right at the bottom near the floor...blows hot air out and up through the stack... A lot of the Wane is on one edge...like most of the 1 x 6s in the stash....and will get removed. Those 3 slices? Not a fan of Bark, even from my 2 dogs....The 3 start at one end at ~ 8".....by the time you get to the other end, barely any good wood is left. May just trim all the bark off, get the edges parallel...and maybe make a table top with them as a glued up panel...we'll see.. I have 12 planks that range from 5' to 6' long, about half & half between 1 x 6 and 1 x 8...shorty is a 1 x 8 x 3' that is twisty and cuppy....intend to rip it right down the center, and take it from there... First 2 planks to head to the shop? 1st plank.. [attachment=54730] Not much to work with? 2nd plank? [attachment=54731] These 2 were 1 x 6 x 5' and there are 2 others like these 2... Stay tuned.. RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-02-2025 Planks #3..and #4.. [attachment=54743] 2 Ash, and 2 Soft Maple planks were sent to the shop..Cross cut, and ripped a few times..all the wane is now ready for the Fire Pit...and what is left over? [attachment=54744] Still had a 1 x 8 x 6' and a 1 x 8 x 3' to take to the shop... [attachment=54745] Shorty will need a bit of work, to get to... [attachment=54746] The 6 footer ( had trouble even getting down to the shop)looked good, from a distance.. [attachment=54747] This is half of that plank...had plenty of knots running right down the middle, causing "issues"... [attachment=54748] This is a piece FROM that plank...got 4 pieces out of that 1 x 8 x 6' plank. [attachment=54749] Hmmm...missed a knot...we have ways.. [attachment=54750] Shorty provided a replacement to use....and a way to widen the panel a tad... [attachment=54751] Into a 5 piece panel... Stay tuned ![]() RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - stav - 06-03-2025 Even with all the waste, you can't complain too much considering what you paid for it. Looking forward to the build. RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - Hank Knight - 06-03-2025 It's a shame more people don't use ash. It's a nice wood to work and looks good under a finish. The Emerald Ash Beetle is laying waste to our ash forests and lots of it is going to waste in the woods. RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-05-2025 Some resaws were done..mainly to the Soft Maple.. [attachment=54754] Set up to mill it at 5/8" thickness ( drawer sides and the drawer back) But, saw only goes up so far... [attachment=54755] So, had to finish the cut the old way.. [attachment=54756] Then plane this down.. [attachment=54757] Until it is smooth and flat.. [attachment=54758] This happens to be the back of the drawer..The Front and the aprons? [attachment=54759] Will be made of Ash...Busy bench? Ripped a batch of Soft Maple down into blanks for the tapered legs.. [attachment=54760] And glued them up into 4 pairs.. [attachment=54761] That were 1-3/4" x 1-3/4" x 26" Once the glue had set overnight..and I changed the saw to a Rip blade.. [attachment=54762] Skimmed 2 edges, just to remove the glue line (1) and the fuzzy stuff 90 degrees from that face....reset the fence, saw the remaining 2 faces at 1-1/2" square, and clamped them up for now.. [attachment=54763] So that they will get used to their new size, and not wiggle out of shape. Stay tuned.. RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-05-2025 Which leaves these.. [attachment=54764] Which are to be the Table's Top...thought about just belt-sanding this flat..until this died.. [attachment=54765] Then, I tried this thing.. [attachment=54766] Was hard to keep on a level keel...so... Wednesday Morning...Brand NEW Saw blade in the Tablesaw! Leg blanks needed a trim on both ends.. [attachment=54767] Yep, left them still ganged up..and the other end? [attachment=54768] Blade was a Birthday Present... 40 tooth ATB Diablo.....then went through and trimmed the 5 (plus 2 more later) for the table's top..one of the cut-offs went Airborne .. [attachment=54769] I was way off to the side went this vibrated over to the spinning blade, and caught it... First dry fit was not very nice.. [attachment=54770] One had too many "Issues", so..we have replacements [attachment=54771] These 2 were from the 1 x8 x 38" Shorty once things were cleaned up... [attachment=54772] Tossed the "Knotty Thing" in the Fire Pit can....One board had issues with knots along one edge Next dry fit.. [attachment=54773] We have work to do... Stay tuned.. RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-05-2025 Well..back to the Olde School Ways..Electric Planer was too hard to keep on an even keel...so [attachment=54784] Each edge needed jointed...and a Stanley No. 6c seemed to work just fine..had to set the next board on top, and check for gaps... [attachment=54785] Got to the point I could try a dry fit, and set up one clamp.. [attachment=54786] Fun part came, when the two 3/4" pipe clamps arrived under the panel....then the cauls and the clamp in the middle.. [attachment=54787] Spreading glue, beating down boards into their places...trying to get the clamps and cauls set up.. [attachment=54788] Will let this sit a few days...last off will be the cauls...pipe clamps can come off tomorrow morning, I think....makes things easier to carry it around, if it gets in the way... That was Wednesday's Shop time....Thursday's was 90 minutes dealing with tapered legs... Stay tuned... |
