Splined Miter Joints - Mr Eddie - 03-19-2025 My SIL wants to wrap some metal posts with wood using a splined miter joint. The posts are 8' tall. Should the spline be one long piece? Does it need to run full length or can he use several small splines perhaps 6" in length? I know many people use a lock miter joint but he doen't have that ability. Thanks for the help. Lonnie RE: Splined Miter Joints - jteneyck - 03-19-2025 I made 9 tapered porch columns for a guy 14 years ago. I used standard 45 degree bevel cuts. I joined the sides with biscuits, spaced about 10" apart. I glued up the columns in halves, and then joined the two halves during installation around the 4 x 4 posts. I used TB III and 18 gage nails to join the halves, and clamps where needed. 14 years, all OK. The columns are MDO and the trim is AZEK. I hadn't thought of MDO but that looks like a good way to go for paint. I'm not sure if he is painting the columns or a natural wood look. Like the idea of biscuits - haven't used my biscuit cutter for a long time. But biscuits look like a quick efficient way to join the sides. Lonnie |
