Glue MDF panels together or not? - Randy C - 03-16-2025

I’m building a corner workbench and I’m going to layer two 3/4 MDF panels together as the substrate for the top. I plan on putting a lot of screws spaced throughout the panel and was wondering would this be sufficient or should I also glue the panels with tightbond. Opinions?

Thanks

I would glue the panels together and use little to no screws. I always used white glue on MDF. I'd get a paint roller, very fine nap or foam) and roll glue on both surfaces. Initially cut the parts oversize and trim to final size after the glue dries, preferably overnight.

Before I had a vacuum bag, I would glue and screw panels together.  The screws make sure the load is evenly distributed. After the glue dried, I'd remove the screws.  I use TB II and spread it with a serrated plastic spreader.

Ime...clamp panels and layout screw locations.
Drill screw holes.
Screw together, then remove.
Using a sharp countersink, chamfer both pieces to remove the "pulled" mdf fiber. It will stop you from getting a good flat surfce.
Glue & screw, no clamps needed.

The screws would be sufficient if you don't mind having them in the bench top. If you glue you'll probably have to use them to clamp the pieces together. I'm not sure what I would do, but probably use glue and screws/

Like others I also usually screw and remove when done.

I've also used only screws and couldn't see a difference. I built my 4x8 outfeed table like that.
