Glue for laminating fishing net - DaveBozeman - 03-02-2025

I've been using Titebond 3 for some trout sized (17x8 basket) nets I've been making... I occasionally get an area where I'm getting a small gap, that the clamping wasn't correct.

I've heard that some epoxy glues will fill these small voids.. but not sure where to look

And if possible, suggestion to fit the nets.. or better to just toss them?

TIA, Dave

Define a "small" void. Pretty much any epoxy will fill a gap.

The nets I built were real educational. I used everything from West System to 5 min epoxy. Even made the mistake of trying gorilla glue once. Length is minor compared to depth of the void. Approaching half the width of the bow and it's a practice run. Anything that deep and you have a serious weak spot. I learned real quick to check during glue up.

Did you need to clamp differently with epoxy?

[attachment=53917]I made 3 fish nets for family members a couple of years ago. My first attempt at making fish nets. I used Total Boat epoxy for all of the glue ups. Epoxy hardens by chemical reaction and is 100% solids. So epoxy will fill voids, although you want to avoid as many as possible. The epoxy I used had a working time of about 30 minutes before it started to begin hardening. This way you don't have to rush too much to get things aligned and clamped up.
Hope this helps.

Nice looking nets!

I'm working on my 6th frame, i dropped mine own fishing in July, not sure what I'm doing differently this time, not laminating perfectly, thought it would be worth trying something else

I was looking at Total Boat vs West System, it seems West has a better shelf life, since I won't use it often, seem it might be worth the extra cost.. still on the fence

How did you avoid the clamps or the form, sticking to the net hoop?

I used a piece of melamine for the base and fastened the hoop form to it. I covered the hoop form with packaging tape and waxed all the surfaces. I didn't do anything to my clamps, they all came off OK.

Shape and type of net depends on species of fish, boat or wading. I make trout nets with nets designed for no handling release.

I found a custom fishnet maker on the internet that had a chart of all the shapes and sizes of nets they made. I used that for a guide. Actually I printed out the chart and then enlarged the size net ( to full size ) that I wanted to make. I then purchased the replacement basket for the net before I began making the form. That way I could make sure that the hoop was not going be too big or too small. Once I had the net, I made a test form out of 1 inch foam insulation so I could refine the shape. When I was satisfied with the shape, then I made the hoop form out of wood. Not an expert at this, but it worked for me.
