A good woodworking school in the Northeast - davco - 01-25-2024
Hi All,
I got laid off last spring and decided to retire. The company that laid me off will provide $2500 in tuition assistance for any career-based retraining I'd like. I have 30+ years of experience woodowrkig mostly with power tools, but I'd
like to hone up on my hand skills: planes, chisels, sharpening etc. Can anyone recommend a decent school for shorter-term courses?

If you live near the Hartford/Springfield area I would recommend the Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking. Check out their website.

I've taken two week-long workshops at The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport Maine and enjoyed both of them. The workshop offerings vary from year-to-year. They range from basic woodworking to very advanced skills. Many are taught by visiting craftsmen, some of whom you have probably heard of or read about. One of my workshops was taught by Craig Vandal Stevens. The other one was taught by Garrett Hack. Both taught hand tool skills. I learned a lot. Ths school is located in Rockport Maine. My wife went with me and spent the time I was in class visiting lighthouses and soaking up Andrew Wyeth art. We stayed in nearby Camden and enjoyed great seafood, beautiful boats and the local culture. Oh, and by the way, Lie-Nielsen is located nearby if you are looking to augment your hand tool collection.
