My granddaughter sent me these pictures of a piece of live edge she has. She's not sure what it is but thinks it is some sort of citrus - maybe grapefruit. She's trying to find some special use for it and wondering how best to stabilize the edge and what finish to use. I suggested shellac or varnish. There are also some cracks or voids in the surface. I suggested filling with epoxy, but what kind?
Any ideas on wood type? Am I on the right track for finishing it?

Hard to tell, but citrus woods do spalt so she could be right. Still, what does it matter? I cannot even see it this is cookie - cross section - or what kind of cut. Is it dry? What does she mean by stabilizing the edge? Keeping the bark on?
I would get it air dry before applying any finish.

Ths is a cross-section, well-dried I believe. Wants to keep the bark edge. Also fill voids. She is just a beginner - and 1,000 miles away. Trying to help her out long distance.

Got error messages trying to look at the pictures.
If it is a cross-section of a tree trunk, it will definitely crack. The only way to prevent this is with polyethlene glycol, which is readily available via the Net. Have her get some (quickly) and follow the directions, it's not hard to do.
