RE: Something for a July Project? - bandit571 - 07-09-2025 Second corner...needed a bit of clean up.. [attachment=55144] Once I checked it for square... [attachment=55145] So..now the back corners are now done... [attachment=55146] So, what is next up? [attachment=55147] It will involve these 3 items...The "Front" will be trimmed for length, and then attached via through dovetails... The Top? [attachment=55148] Also needs to be trimmed down a bit...and a rebate milled on each end, and along the "back edge".. [attachment=55149] So it can sit in a groove along the back and the 2 sides...so that it sits flush with the top edges... Then see about how to attach that lid... Stay tuned.. RE: Something for a July Project? - bandit571 - 07-12-2025 Needed to cut 2 bevels, so... [attachment=55180] Tilt the blade over to the correct angle...took a little bit of fussing...then run the parts through... [attachment=55181] Next up...join the front to the sides...more dovetails to cut...someday, I just might get good at doing them? [attachment=55182] One corner done did....as for the other end...? [attachment=55183] Spacing problem? at least it fits... [attachment=55184] There is an issue with how the angled sides meet the beveled front...will correct that after a glue up has been done. Later today? have 3 grooves to plough..so I can fit the top of the box into them..Rebates on 3 sides are already milled into the top..the 3 that do not have a bevel...Top is to be slid into the grooves, glued in place...and sit flush with the top of the box.. We'll see how this goes...fun part? Rigging up a way to hold the panels while I run the Stanley #45.... Stay tuned.. RE: Something for a July Project? - bandit571 - 07-13-2025 Frog Drowner with an EF-0 attached, blew through here last night,,,trees are down, tree limbs everywhere...Dungeon Creek was running through the shop..and the Wi-Fi Interwebbies was hit and we loss all internet...from last evening until about 2pm today.... Waiting on the floor of the shop to dry out... Before all that "Fun" arrived..I managed to plough 3 grooves.. [attachment=55225] On the top edge of both side panels..and then one at the top of the back panel... [attachment=55226] Test the fit...this needed a hair more depth.. [attachment=55227] Looks about right... Might as well glue the entire mess together? [attachment=55228] Might have been a bit skimpy on clamps? Waiting on the shop to dry out...then clean this box up, and start to fit the lid..once that is done, add a base, and see about a finish of some sort? Stay tuned.. RE: Something for a July Project? - bandit571 - 07-14-2025 Floor IS starting to dry out a bit...I dumped out the dust bag from the belt sander to act as "Floor Dry".. Clamps have been removed and hung away....needed to use a plane for a bit.. [attachment=55236] To level the opening for the lid to sit into... [attachment=55237] Including going across end grain....plane is a Millers Falls No. 8, with OEM iron....seemed to have very little trouble.. Was trying to fit the lid...and see where it will need cut/trimmed at.. [attachment=55238] Have a few cuts to make, next time I am in the shop... Stay tuned... RE: Something for a July Project? - bandit571 - 07-15-2025 Lid has been trimmed down to size....needed rests made for the lid to sit on, when the lid is closed up.. [attachment=55247] Something like this? [attachment=55248] Angles only had to be close, not perfect...then.. [attachment=55249] They were glued and clamped into place, used a cut-off from trimming the lid for length to place the stops in the correct stop..so that the lid will sit down flush with the side of the box... Next item in the Lid Work....need 2 hinges..there was an "Issue", though... [attachment=55250] Needs bent to wrap over the front edge...we have ways... [attachment=55251] A Monarch of a Hinge Bender? Test for fit.. [attachment=55252] Fairing close..can fine tuned during the install... [attachment=55253] Screws that came with the hinges are a tad too long for the thickness of the lid..by about 1/8" or so...may get shorter ones? Update of Dungeon Creek... [attachment=55254] A "work in progress"? Stay tuned.. RE: Something for a July Project? - EightFingers - 07-15-2025 Why not cut the hinge to fit? I wouldn’t like to have that little bit showing when the lid is closed RE: Something for a July Project? - bandit571 - 07-15-2025 Time for a little assembly? [attachment=55256] Ok..base needed the front and the 2 ends rounded over...Stanley No. 4-1/2, Type 11 base was attached to the case with counter sunk screws. No glue. Then, 4 peg "feet" were added. Hey, the lid works! [attachment=55257] I guess I had better close it up.. [attachment=55258] Next time I am in the shop..intend to sand EVERYTHING down to 220 grit, clean all the dust off, and...add a coat of Witch's Brew..brush on, wipe off.. [attachment=55259] Will let this sit here, until that occurs.. Stay tuned.. I have done that once before on granddaughters box and I let her use a dead blow mallet to do it. She still loves and uses it at 8yo RE: Something for a July Project? - bandit571 - 07-16-2025 ROS was out of sand paper!...Went to Menard's today..picked a pack of 120 grit and 220 grit hook & Loop discs... Was out and about, trying to get Bills paid...today being Pay Day.... RE: Something for a July Project? - bandit571 - 07-17-2025 Box has been sanded to 220 grit...and a coat of Witch's Brew applied... Witch's Brew needed a refill....1 8oz can of Dark Walnut+ 1 8oz can of Gunstock stains....mix into the quart can...and stir well. Letting things dry a while...Film @2300 hrs... Will wait a day or 2, then add a coat of Warm Gloss Poly..and see how it turns out... Stay tuned.. ![]() |
