RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-13-2025 Drawer front.... [attachment=54905] After 2 rip cuts. Then that longer one goes on top...tenons were cut on the ends of both drawer dividers.. [attachment=54906] Nothing real fancy. Drawer sides and the back... All needed ripped to match the drawer front....they also needed to be the same thickness... [attachment=54907] Ripping Soft Maple..stinks like old Gym Socks....I left the Front at 3/4" thick. sides and back are 1/2" thick. There is a need for Corner Braces....both the square the base up during a glue up, and, once a slot is milled, a way to attach the Top to the base, [attachment=54908] Couldn't get to either the MitreBox & Saw, nor the Tablesaw...so the cuts were SLOWLY cut out at the Bandsaw...not because it was dull ( new Blade) but I simply took my time.. [attachment=54909] These go into each corner like this... [attachment=54910] Glued into place, during the base glue up...with.. [attachment=54911] 2 countersunk screws. So...next trip to the shop, hopefully with a dry floor, I need to detach one leg, and take it to the Mortise Jig still on the bench..lay out and chop 2 small mortises, test fit them using the drawer front to locate the bottom divider. Do the same with the other leg...then..maybe...try for a glue-up of the base? Stay tuned.. BTW: I also need to mill a bead along the bottom edge of the bottom divider..to match the rest of the aprons.. Hmmmm I expected to see the Stanley 45 or 55 out and working. ![]() RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-15-2025 Task #1..mill a bead along the bottom edge of the bottom drawer divider.. [attachment=54914] Task #2....chop 4 Mortises for the tenons ... [attachment=54915] 1st one...then followed by the other 3... [attachment=54916] Then try a dry fit... [attachment=54917] Task #3..finish making the rest of the corner braces... [attachment=54918] Task #4 was completed this morning... [attachment=54919] Assemble the 2 Long sides with glue and clamps, then add the back end of the base... [attachment=54920] Finally glue in the drawer dividers, and the corner braces...check for square..and sit back and wait for the glue to cure... Stay tuned...still need to get a drawer made, and get the Top ready to attach to the Base...then see about a finish of some sort... RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-16-2025 Mondays in the shop...does not happen unless I get very bored..sooo Plan WAS just to remove the 8 clamps...that WAS the plan.. [attachment=54925] But..then these things showed up, demanding to be installed.. [attachment=54926] They are supposed to be Drawer Guides.. [attachment=54927] The thicker parts are to be the "Runners" and the Thin parts do the guiding... The thicker parts are a bit too rough...so.. [attachment=54928] We have ways...they then get trimmed for length, and notched to go around the corner of the legs.. [attachment=54929] Glue and clamps only...I glue and clamp one end first..to where it is flush with the top edge of the bottom Drawer Divider..where the drawer will be sliding...then, use a combo square to set the back end to the same height,,, [attachment=54930] And repeat for the other runner.... the 2 skinny guides were fitted between the leg corners....to where they were flush...and glued and clamped in place.. [attachment=54931] And decided to just let this sit a day... Tomorrow? Trying to decide whether to build the Drawer, or....finish work on the Table's Top.... Stay tuned.. RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-18-2025 Normally, I do not do Half Blind Dovetails....so, I am a bit out of practice...anyway.. Lay out.. [attachment=54959] Not really that big of a drawer...Time for that saw laying there to do a bit of work.. [attachment=54960] Without overcutting into the "baselines"....we have ways.. [attachment=54961] A stiff putty knife, reground down to match (almost) the Kerf left by the saw...Driven down slowly with taps of the hammer...trying NOT to split out the wood..Time to get out a chisel or 2.. [attachment=54962] And a chopping board. Once the pins are done, I use them to trace around to lay out the Tails...bandsaw out the waste in-between the tails...and try a dry fit.. [attachment=54963] Then, repeat for the other corner at the front of the drawer. Back corners get a through dovetail..in theory... [attachment=54964] But, when one gets tired, or in a hurry...compost happens... Next? All 4 sides get a 1/4" x 1/4" Groove... [attachment=54965] A dry fit, to get the size of a plywood panel laid out.. [attachment=54966] Cut the panel almost to size, try a fit, remove a bit along one long side...then glue and clamps arrive.. [attachment=54967] Making sure the corners are square...left side was trying to bow in a bit...we have ways... [attachment=54968] Scrap cut to match the inside of the non-bowed section...slid into the bowed area with a hammer assist...no glue. letting this sit a day....today was Pay Day, so ..other errands needed to be run....I did pick up a couple of handles to choose from for the drawer...have to decide which looks better.. Stay tuned.. RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-19-2025 Drawer came out of the clamps..was cleaned up..had a few spots that were a tad too fat..First try, in fact, [attachment=54976] Stopped right about here...took a while, but finally.... [attachment=54977] Got it to slide in and out without getting stuck, or hitting anything along the way.. Handles? [attachment=54978] Even the smallest of the 2 was way too big..so.. [attachment=54979] I'll just go with this little "peg"....means I need to drill a hole.. [attachment=54980] #4 drill bit, cordless drill...then a dab of glue, and an assist with a hammer.. [attachment=54981] That should do that... Drilled 4 slots.. [attachment=54982] Regular Cordless drill, drill straight down, then rock Fore & Aft until the slot appears.. These are for the screws to attach the Top to the Base... Stay tuned... RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-19-2025 Also this morning, as part of a 2-1/2 hour work session...clamps were also removed for the panel for the Table's Top.. Yesterday, I picked up the replacement for my old Warrior Belt sander... [attachment=54983] With the same model 3 x 21 Warrior....plus a few packs of sanding belts...Set a 50 grit belt to work...followed by an 80 grit...followed buy ROS, then a #1204 smooth plane...then a palm sander to 220 grit....finally used the #80 cabinet scraper... [attachment=54984] With one face done, flip over and repeat for the other face...then choose which face looks the best...and that will be the top of the Top.. Top off of a rattlecan of paint, provided the radius to mark the 4 corners with...then that belt sander was used to remove the "waste", ala Norm Abram... [attachment=54985] Top is sitting "good side down"....centered the base onto the top...added the 4 attachment screws.. [attachment=54986] And snugged the Base down... Right about here, toes were starting to cramp up...decided to stop for today...sweep the floor, and head back upstairs.. Need to set up the Router to mill a profile around the edge of the Top...Then get everything sanded to 220 grit, and see about a coat of Witch's Brew Stain..brush on/wipe off. Maybe tomorrow, eh? Stay tuned.. RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-22-2025 Router and a fancy cove bit? [attachment=54996] Ran a cove all around the top of the table.. [attachment=54997] Then worked on getting things ready for a finish to go on.... [attachment=54998] This one was set a bit coarse...but was followed up with... [attachment=54999] A Fine set No.80....then wiped down..and then a coat of Witch's Brew Stain.. [attachment=55000] Was brushed on and wiped off on the Base of the table....then flip the table over and do the same with the top.. [attachment=55001] Along with the drawer, inside and out... Then, toss that rag out into the trash.....and let everything dry overnight... Next day...Varnish the top...let it sit for about 4 hours...flip the table over onto a layer of NEW, LINT-FREE Rags...and varnish the base...and the front of the drawer...let these sit a day... Stay tuned... RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - bandit571 - 06-23-2025 Table is done... [attachment=55017] A view of the drawer sticking out a bit... [attachment=55018] Then closed up... [attachment=55019] A look at the side... [attachment=55020] And the top of the table... [attachment=55021] Just a simple, little Table with a drawer... Thanks for looking in! ![]() RE: Will just have to wait a bit.. - MarkSingleton - 06-24-2025 Well done Bandit. |
