RE: 3-Stage Water Filtration Systems - sleepy hollow - 07-31-2025

I purchased a three-stage whole house filtration system about 7-8 years ago.  Here is the company I bought from:  https://uswatersystems.com/collections/whole-house-cartridge-filter-systems this takes you to a page with their latest 3-stage filter system.  I paid about 450 back then, so it has gone up about 75% since then, but the system has been great.  High quality and not too hard to install.  I bought the 1" fitting model since I have a 1" copper line coming off my expansion tank.  My issues were slight iron taste and minor sediment from the well staining fixtures.

I have a 20 micron filter followed by a 5 micron filter followed by a carbon axial filter.  Since installing it, we have been very pleased.  Iron taste completely gone.  No sediment in toilet tanks, no more staining.  Filters have lasted as much as 5 years, believe it or not.  I highly recommend this company.  They advertise as American made and have a lifetime warranty.

I added pressure gauges before and after the filter setup to look for differences that might give ma a clue as to when the filters might need changing.  Still have not seen any differences.  I also plumbed a bypass line to allow for filter changes with no disruption.  Takes about 30 minutes to change only because I have to carefully get brim-full containers into 5 gal buckets, hose out the housings, and replace them.  They are easy to remove but a bit heavy when full.  Not a problem for me as I am 6'3" and 230 pounds.  But my wife would not be able to change these.

Very happy with this company and product.  Even at twice the price a great deal for me a DIY-er.

But what's wrong with it?

Pressure shouldn't change much, even with dirty filters. Flow rate changes can be significant.

Of course!. Makes sense.  Thank you for the insight.  One can never stop learning.

When I changed the filters after 1 year there was no noticeable change to what I now will call flow rate. But after 5-years, there was a noticeable increase in flow (which I mistakenly took to be pressure).   I have to say, though, I was the only one who noticed.  My wife did not think there was anything different.  If I had to guess I would say 10% increase max.  Not much, so I would say that confirms what the water company told me - I have near perfect water except for some very minimal iron and sediment.  Not worth anything other than passive filtration according to them.  They recommended a single 10" whole house filter.  I went for three 20" filters.  It cost about $200 more so well worth it (pun intended) in my book.

I can stop looking at those gauges and scratching my head.
